Which part of my laptop is screwed hdd, ram, wifi?

Strange issue downloading files - all files corrupt.

download via network cable = all files are fine

download via wifi = corrupt

other machines in house downloading fine on wifi

tried brand new usb wifi adapter = files still corrupt

Anyone have any ideas on this?

------------------

one clue maybe that when the file has stopped downloading in the browser it seems to take ages before the file is ready to use. It just sits there in chrome with the green spinning wheel for like 30-60 seconds? only does that with wifi not network cable.

Could that indicate ram issue?

Have you tried a different browser? You mentioned specifically a goofy Chrome issue. Try Firefox and see what happens.

ok thanks will test that now..

Seems more like a Firewall issue or other security related program:
I would almost guess your wifi connection gets treated as "public network" and therby not trusted
while your cable network gets treated as "Home" or "Office" network and thereby have more things allowed from the start.

Interesting. All my other machines are set up to view the wif as public but work fine. However perhaps some security setting on this machine is causing it to corrupt files. Will try to find out what it could be.

thanks

If pages load properly on the laptop wifi but the issues is only with files ...
but files download to completion if you use an Ethernet cable ... take the laptop close to the wifi modem or hotspot being used and try it ... see what happens .. connectivity to complete the download maybe?

thanks to everyone that gave ideas and hints....

it was indeed something with avast.... disabled shields for 10mins and the download are not corrupting.

Have to set my wifi connection to local or adjust my avast settings somehow. Wow saved me a lot of hassle. Was about to start replacing bits.

gfy - source of all knowledge seriously, this forum has helped me solved so many times.

cheers.

You are welcome.

I used to run an IT department with 12 employeesbefore. Have gotten countless of similar, un-explainable, issues presented to me over the years.

Ah avast settings huh? Well if you have a touch screen it's easy to fix. Bring up avast settings and take a large hammer and hit the screen as hard as you can with the hammer. Problems fixed. :thumbsup

I got the similar issue, and it was caused by avast.
