It's amazing to me how few people I have encountered in this business that are not proactively involved with their data/site integrity (backups, DNS, etc). Or, they rely on a managed host to do it all for them without ever even checking a sample of the data.

everyone should have some kind of offsite backup of their hosting accounts either at home or somewhere at another datacenter.
