Eight cents pills already routinely prescribed to strengthen bones could save 1,000 lives a year if used to treat breast cancer, according to eagerly awaited new evidence.

However, experts have warned that unless the Government intervenes, many patients could miss out because the drugs are not licensed for use against cancer.

The drugs, known as bisphosphonates, have been used for years to treat the bone-weakening condition osteoporosis.

A new analysis of evidence from 18,766 patients, published in The Lancet medical journal, reveals that among post-menopausal women with breast cancer, the drugs reduced 10-year mortality risk by 18 per cent.

About two thirds of all women with breast cancer could benefit from the drugs, and according to the leading research charity Breast Cancer Now, 34,000 women could benefit and their routine use could save up to 1,000 lives a year.

Uhmm... a business has to make a profit. It has to make a profit or it can't spend BILLIONS and BILLIONS on research which cures disease such as the pharmaceutical industry does. You know.. the research that enables to modern medicine to treat almost all diseases known to man? The drugs and treatments which have doubled our lifespan in less than 2 centuries.

Thats an assumption, the pill hasn't been approved for use for this purpose, hasn't been studied, no clinical trials AND YOU added the "but not profitable" part.

You readily make assumptions to support a narrative. Just because the author did as well, doesn't make you any less culpable for your own behavior. The article clearly doesn't state that any study has reached conclusions regarding the efficacy of the pill as a treatment, simply that it "may..." and "possibly.." and "might..."

By the way, from where you got the "not profitable" part? They sell it. It was about the licensing. I know that the development of antibiotics lack because it is not enough profitable, but not using something that is already there? Hospitals still use and describe the medicines, at least around here. You know, cheaper is better, unless it is corrupted doctor (there have been few of those too).
