Me and my partner have been hiring people on this forum since October 2011; a simple search would have revealed this to you.

This sounds like a great job for the right person. Nice seeing some business on GFY.

Made an account just to reply to this, because it sounds like an incredible opportunity. I do not have a fast connection, but I would love to have a job that was essentially paying me to live in an area with Google Fiber. I certainly don't expect to get hired speculatively, I'm just hoping to get a couple answers and maybe try to make some future plans.

What kind of duration do you typically hire uploaders for? With five+ people uploading 1000 scenes per week you would exhaust all the content on Videobox in under a month - is this an ongoing job for competent uploaders, something your employees actually live off of, or more like a supplemental short-term gig?

Also, is there any particular reason this is being done "manually"? Even if you don't have APIs on both the downloading and uploading ends to plug together, surely this job can be automated to some degree? Unless there's something I'm missing here, I feel like a few weeks of scripting together a solution could make the other four uploaders redundant.

Thanks!

Hi there,

We are open to an automated solution but in the nearly 4 years that we have been doing this all the proposed automated solutions we have been approached with have not been satisfactory.

Also, there are parts of the job that have to be done manually so it can never be 100% automated.

Please leave your skype username in this thread if you'd like to discuss this further.

It could be 100% Automated, but the tube sites would need to provide Api access.

** I have TWC with 300Mbps-Down and 50Mbps-Up **

1) Do you own the videos or have the legal authority to redistribute them?
2) How much do you pay and what payment method do you use?
3) How long is this project going to last?

Thanks for the invitation! I tend to keep odd hours, but my Skype username is also: Degenernate

I offer zero guarantees, but if you're willing I would like to walk through your current manual process and evaluate the feasibility of automating portions of it. Even with APIs I doubt I have the skill to build software that would entirely replace your uploaders, but I do believe I can build software sufficient for me to replace several of them (at an increased pay scale, natch). My only expectation would be that if I can demonstrate a stable, scalable workflow we would find some arrangement to get me out to Portland and into one of those new CenturyLink gigabit fiber drops; if I don't get anywhere, I've mostly just wasted my time. If that sounds like a worthwhile gamble to you, let's talk.

I'm personally not at all surprised off-the-shelf automation solutions have been inadequate. "Pick an appropriately enticing thumbnail image" is one of those tasks (see XKCD 1425), something you can't easily have your computer do even if your computer is Watson. Also, if the tags and titles aren't being supplied by the content providers that's a small additional truckload of creative work that needs to happen manually (though I could see building a system that would enable an uploader to do this in batches rather than piecemeal). I'm sure there are more. Best case scenario here isn't eliminating the uploaders entirely, it's just streamlining the process to the point where one uploader can keep his connection saturated, and the other four become redundant.

Even without API access, I still think a large degree of automation is possible, the only caveat being that this would be super hacky and actually counterproductive without an extreme degree of monitoring and input constraint. Consider the problem I was facing a few months ago: Playing an MMORPG (FF14) with a horrifically grindy and boring crafting system, a scenario openly hostile to automation. A drinky bird wasn't going to cut it because each attempt at making an item required a mouse click to initiate the process, but from there just needed a few keyboard presses at predictable intervals. With a few fancy libraries involved, the Python code necessary to completely automate that process was trivial, no API needed - but if I wanted to package it up and have other people using it under arbitrary conditions, I'd still be writing code. If no one else ever has to see or interact with my filthy hacks, though, there's a lot I can accomplish. :winkwink:

Assuming the creative is sent as part of the media payload, automation is feasable if tube sites provided POST access, but obviously one could use browser automation. The issue then becomes maintenance.

Also I agree that if the creative is not included, automation's a null issue. There is Mech-Turk though. ;)

Oh how I love the mighty Python ;)
Code:

from .cooler import Beer
Are you sure you can't automate it standing in front of an NPC while using some Macros and a keyboard with G-Keys? Maybe you need a, Magic.AHK!

Oh and don't beat yourself up too bad over having filthy hacks, you can always wrap them up. ;)
