How many GFY webmasters are veterans?

In keeping with the mood of the evening...

How many of you served in any branch of the armed forces for your nation?

I'll start, I'm a Navy Veteran, just at the tail end of the Vietnam conflict, where I did NOT serve.

Exactly. It was a great four years...I spent one of them in the Middle East. Worked great when I was in college during the hostage crisis...I wrote a bunch of papers on it because I was in Iran a few times.

90 - 91 Ryhad Saudi Arabia ... went beyond the lines in Iraq the first time.

Wish I wasn't so fat or overaged to go back. I left there knowing America would have to return someday to finish the job.

The Iraqi people I met during that war thought we were going to liberate them then. The looks in thier eyes of hope knowing in thier hearts it was almost over for the repressive regime.

I can never get those images out of my head. I hope we finish the job this time. The people of the owrld will hear the different stories if we finish the job this time.

sextoyking 03-17-2003 09:57 PM

Jfp,

you know it bro. It wasn't too wise to get in a bad way with the fire people, they could make your shots and rounds go way off:)

Ft Sill, damm haven't thought about that place in years. Had a blast there and in lawton.

Went off to germany for 2 years. It was cool there, lots of drinking, gals, etc. but those 45 days out in the field, back for 30-45 days and back out again in 30- below zero really was fucked up. Luckily I made Sgt e-5 in 2 years, so it was a little easier.

but you know, just like 11B, 19D, 13b is still at the bottom, grunt work:))

Nuclear Reactor Operator -- USS Nimitz CVN-68.

It was an experience I am glad I did, but would NEVER do again. The military and I aren't a good mix.

I left before they went in dry dock to Norfolk.. That was in Jul 97. I can pretty much guarantee I didn't know her. Women were JUST coming through the nuclear program when I was leaving so I never really met any. The gals (not that many on the ship when I was there) in other departments I never really saw/fraternized with.

Was referring to the ship as "she". So you were in Bremerton, then? I was in Oak Harbor, and my friend was Rich Barrett...can't remember exactly what his rate was though.

:(

Ahh.. The "she" thing. I get it.. The whole "Reactor" side of the Navy isn't (or wasn't) really that "gung ho" when I was going through it. We were really cynical and never really conforned to strict protocol in day-to-day life. It was a very MASH-like (the TV show) atmosphere there.

So the "she" threw me for a loop. :)

And yeah, all my time with the Nimitz was in Bremerton as a home-base. I liked the Seattle area. When it's nice it's REALLY nice.. Does rain a lot like they say though!

Javellin - it's shoulder launch piece of shit, manually guided... crap for bringing down planes, designed to knock out helicopters.

No mate, never been to Fort Bliss or Texas... will get there eventually..... someday :)

Army from 90 - 97

4 years artillery, 3 years air traffic control

Being stationed in the 10th mountain Division (Ft Drum) I got some of Somalia and Haiti. Part of a deterrent force when Panama had its first democratic election. Part of humanitarian aid for Hurricane Andrew. Went to air traffic control school then off to South Korea for a year... god I fucking hate Koreans.

i thought the Javellin was a anti-tank weapon,

Ft Bliss is very nice place,, not the cleanest but EL Paso has its memorable spots :)

I agree with you there Playa, did basic and AIT there, started in the summer left in the winter, which was cold as shit.

Fuck no... it auto denates if gets too close to the ground, LOL. If I remember, arrgg, you don't have control of the damn thing for the first 1/2 mile, then it's hot. My old group are no longer using it... they are back on the guns.

Would like to do a tour of Texas, meet up with a few friends on the way ;)

sextoyking 03-17-2003 11:44 PM

Tev,

I hear you there. I got to basic in the Beg of July, and left in Nov.

It was hot as shit at Ft. Sill in the summer and a cold one in the winter.

People were cool, but being from the NW, I didn't understand churches on every block :)

You guys remember reforger from germany days??

We had the whole nato world there, it was a blast.

fucking 24-48 hours straight on the hows, no downtime really, shells were going off like it was the 4th of july. Our battery had it's shit together, well except for everyone was high all the time:)

whoa, thank goodness the stinger didn't have that,
fire and forget its a damn near flawless weapon with a 98% kill rate,

most of those kill stats are from the Afghans fighting the russians those fuckers were jumping off camels and shooting the stinger from the hip, i kid you not,, it was a training video

the only air defense gun we use to use was the vulcan, now that was a kick ass gun

DJRCyberAVS 03-17-2003 11:57 PM

Hey Playa...

LOL... just to make it nice and confusing... there are two types Javelin missiles... you are right mate, there is an anti-tank one made by your guys.... but our group never saw that.

This is the one we used under s-a-m's

http://www.jed.simonides.org/missiles/sam/sam.html

Never heard of the vulcan mate.... as we only used to play at being soldiers, some of us were slightly uneducated in the use of weaponery :winkwink:

the vulcan was a special gatling gun,, that thing can shoot
100 rounds per second, sounds like a huge fart

it was outclassed to shoot aircraft unless the pilot fell asleep :)
so they had to decommission it back in 94, still was a kick ass ground weapon. i seen it literally mow down the top of a tree line and put fire onto a whole country side

they still had a stinger missile in the back you can see the missle
