It doesn't surprise me at all. And no it's not a joke. I was born in Singapore so I know all of it's dirty little secrets that they hide from "tourists" who thinks they seen a piece of heaven when they visit Singapore. I left there when I was 10 years old and raised in the US and Canada. Maybe I'm too westernized but when I went back for 2 years to take care of the sale of my family's business and estate, I felt like I was dying inside every day I lived there. I thought I would move there when I retired but I would rather reserve a place in Hell before moving back to Singapore. I gladly sold my home there and as mentioned, I got out of there as soon as I could.

Don't give me the whole GDP capita BS that they feed the media. Most regular Singaporeans are extremely stressed because they are trying to make ends meet for their family. They don't even want to bring children into the world because they don't know if they can afford having children. Don't get me wrong, there are wealthy individuals living in Singapore. My family's estate, there were a ferrari or Lambo in every parking lot in the estate. But trust me, the majority of the population live in "flats" or apartment buildings. Bungalows and more luxurious homes are only a very small part of the population. That bastard's son lived 7 houses away from my family's house.

Case and point, about 10 years ago, these ass clowns Lee and his cohorts realized that the population was dwindling because of less "Singaporeans were having less Singaporean babies". Gee I wonder why? Perhaps because you tax the fuck out of your citizens you moron. Anyways, To stimulate population growth, this same ass clown Lee and the gov't encouraged immigration BUT WITH A TWIST. Any immigrant who marries a Singaporean automatically gets a Singapore Citizenship. Talk about devaluing your country's people and making them cheap cattle. Come breed with our people so we can tax your ass and pay my monkey son 2.6 million dollars in salary each year.

Why do this? Because internal memos obtained through a secret investigation revealed that the Singapore gov't was worried not about the problem about the dwindling population but it was for taxes. These fuckers were worried about not being able to tax it's citizens so they opened the flood gates for immigration.

What happens? Well, as of 2 years ago, Singapore's population now consists of over 51% of non Singapore born individuals. So basically the country's non Singaporeans outnumber true Singaporeans there. Singapore normally consists of Chinese, Malay, Indians, British, Eurasians. That's the normal mix of true Singaporeans. Now that diversity consists of more Thai, Filipinos, Indonesians, and other less than ideal races being migrated into the country. Violent crime, scams and etc... have increased exponentially with the introduction of these races into a very previously safe country. All for what? So Lee and his son and his corrupt gov't can collect more taxes.

ps. One more fun fact. You only own your property there for 99 years. After 99 years, your land/house goes back to the gov't. WTF???

I think your view is a bit warped and a lot of it goes against trend. I have family living there and I visit often. You're right that people are working their asses off their, im damn sure about that. And most people don't live well as in most low taxation island states, so you have HDB housing on one side and regular housing on another.

However, the rules regarding bringing people over for tax purposes doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Wealthy who move to Singapore do so to enjoy the low taxes and many who live there pay a zero rate of income tax.

The reason is because tax is territorial there -if your income is derived from outside of Singapore. This is why a lot of wealthy move there with their foreign companies paying them dividends (the non-source results in the zero rate). Most of the wealthy do a lot of tax planning before they consider Singapore and I'm quite sure they pay low taxes because I know many in that situation.

The GDP per capita figures are official..... and absolutely straight (compiled by independent sources like the CIA, a US intelligence agency), but you have to understand that you have a small number of people earning very high incomes and the masses earning very low incomes and it averages out to the GDP per capita figure. It is still one of the highest in the world and with good reason.
