looking to start an online community - need some recommendations please

I'm not a webmaster and I really don't want to invest any money into creating a site. So I'm looking at all the free forum sites and make your own community sites but I'm not sure which is a good one to use. I'm hoping there's one that's easy to use and somehow takes the responsibility of generating traffic to it out of my hands.

Once again any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

NB: This is a non-porn and non-file sharing community that I want to start.
(yes I'm aware of this being a porn industry board but at least I'm asking questions about religion or politics)

what the fuck you want?

Free software on a free server that magically pulls traffic and creates a busy online community while he sleeps. Can't you read?

Wow you figured it out your first try! I guess it's not true what everyone says about you being the load your mother should have swallowed.

As I said in the original post. I'm not a webmaster, programer, etc. I don't know how to do these things. So obviously I'm going to look for something that takes care of all that for me.

why not get something which majority site owners are using and put some time in it.

Maybe it's because I'm not trying to make money from it? Listen up, I appreciate what you gentlemen do but I have my business and it's not being a webmaster and I have more than enough contacts to sell the content for what little smut I'm shooting these days.

What I'm doing these days is events photography and /or specialized shoots involving old style (vintage) photography. ie: Kodachrome, Wet plate, photogenic drawing, etc. So I just want to create something like a forum (or some sort of community) where information about these old photographic techniques can be shared.

Rest assured I'm not looking to create monsterlithic site.

Let's try this from a different perspective.

If any of you had to chose between these platforms which would it be.

Create a free forum ? Free forum hosting | FORUMOTION
Boardhost: Create a free forum or message board. Reliable, remotely hosted.

I wouldn't use anything free unless I was hosting it and had control over my hard work and/or community.

Some days you ask a question and there's people only too happy to try and help while other days it's just futile trying to learn something.

Conclusion : The Internet is bipolar.

First, that comeback really made me laugh out loud. Congrats on that one.

But really, Dirty F is right when he summarized your post when he said

So your jab at him wasn't fair. Funny, but not fair, because DirtyF is right. You want free this, free that, free something else, and free advice too.

If you really, really want free, why not just start a Facebook community? It's free free free, and its a fast way to get what you want.

If you want to own it and have more control, forget free. Whip out your credit card and invest a little money into your idea. Register a domain at godaddy, then create a forum at vBulletin.com using their cloud service. Initial cost: Peanuts. Set it up and customize it the way you want, then start spreading the word through social media.

Good luck!

The Internet these days is 0.10¢ a trillion.
Now I mean absolutely ZERO offense or insult to any of you gentlemen (and any ladies that may be present). But in terms of money, the Internet puts absolutely nothing directly into my pocket. It never has and it's most likely never will.

About the only thing the net does for me is to provide me with a quick reference library and access to other people that may know something about a subject I'm researching. It's this "indirect" route that allows me to research things like wet plate photography that pays by bills.

There's tons of free forums, free blogs, free communities, etc. etc. etc. It's just a much more practical solution for someone in my situation. So really why should I fork out money for a domain then make go to the trouble of creating a forum that will only get buried in the Internet graveyard?

PS. Just a little off topic here but...

Let me tell you a true story about why I don't and won't do facebook. I'm a photographer and I'm not saying that I'm anything great or special. It's just how I pay my bills.

Now one day some jackass on Facebook took one of my non-porn photos and uploaded it to their account. I had zero clue that someone SCANNED in some of my work. It was later monetized by facebook and the first I heard about this was when Facebook's legal department sent my client (who paid for the use of my photo) a cease and desist letter.

Now here I am... The guy that took the photo and the guy with the negatives and they're the assholes trying to dictate who can and can't use my stuff. So no.. I'm never going to have a facebook account.

Because it costs little more than free to build and host it yourself, removing the risk that someone else's company has control over your content, your forum, YOUR hard work.

A domain at GoDaddy.com is .99 today.

A year of hosting can be had for less than $50.

It's dead simple to put all this together, even for someone who's never done it before. Hell, you can find cheap hosting with one click install and everything is done for you.

You keep control. You can do what you want with your community.

It's pretty simple and makes no sense to use free services. You're not going to find ANYONE here who's going to suggest that's a good idea, because it's not.

You can even use Wordpress to build a forum. It's worth the time and a few dollars spent to keep control of your own stuff. It's really as simple as that.

:2 cents:

shoot twice - you don't sell ANY of your content online? Nobody at this forum has bought your content? You have really earned $0 from here, or elsewhere on the internet, ever?

I have been so fucking ripped off, screwed over and burned that I'm not selling jack shit to anyone. I've lost far more money from the net than I've ever made. So If someone wants content then they can pay me to be the gun on their set (and I want cash). But otherwise my phone is going to stay off the hook.

Plus to be honest these days my involvement in the porn industry is purely facultative. It's for these reasons that I have absolutely no desire to make any kind of financial investment in the Internet.

I'm not going to upload a single photo. What I want it for is purely information exchange on old photographic techniques and development.

So, why not just join one of the discussion forums that already exist?

.

Barry-xlovecam 03-18-2015 09:39 AM

Not Porn? Facebook or Twitter

Facebook will have a peer2peer payment system soon (if it's not "adult content").

You would need a point of return should Facebook or Twitter close (unlikely) more likely some content matter or payment dispute. By point of return I mean a real domain -- that would be preferrable to [email protected].

You don't want to build a community on some free platform that may disappear.

You can take advantage of the existing silo of users (see: silo - IndieWebCamp ) and other traffic (maybe search someday) by using Facebook or Twitter. Their platforms are made to be usable by non-webmasters.
