They have hoods. The only hats I can recall are steel and iron helmets, not very warm I'd imagine.

I think the 700 foot wall had something to do with it. Plus the arrival of a few thousand mounted TRAINED knights cutting through them as they ran played a factor. Wildlings had zero real training. Watch the episode, read the books It's all there.

I'm not sure. That may have simply been a bluff by Mance Rayder, as we only have his word that they were sent.

Summers can last for as long as 9 years according to certain mentions in the books.

By definition a summer cannot last longer than a year....
