Any gfy Bakers? Question.

I made a cake out of a box with my daughter the other day.
Cake went fine but I'm unsure about the icing.

The chocolate powder was mixed with butter and milk and spread over the cake.
Will the milk go off and make us Ill?

When you are planning to eat it? Is that American style dry cake or something like that?

In cases like this, I always say follow your nose. If it smells weird, it is weird and it's time to chuck it. But.. how could a cake last that long? haha. Fridge it if you can.

No its regular chocolate cake with chocolate icing.
It was made on Sunday. Still plenty left.

If you and your family haven't been living in some bubble, it is quite hard to see how you could get ill from the frosting.

Regular European style (wet) cake is just fine 5-7 days if kept in fridge.

fridge it and it will last

It's powder milk, which has a shelf life of like 200 years

Exactly. All of the liquid has been removed. It won't sour or curdle and get you sick. That being said, a cake is only good for a couple of days anyways until it dries out too much and tastes nasty.

It wasn't in the fridge and it wasn't powdered milk.
Think I will just chuck it.

If it doesn't taste bad, there shouldn't be problem. Milk products rarely cause any sickness, raw milk excluded (not pasteurizated). But the butter can get bad taste too, not just milk. You should fridge cakes.

Tellin ya, it's fine until it's not and you'll know when it's not. The nose never fails. I think all humans know what sour milk smells like, so no worries. The cake will become dry and hard before the icing is bad.

I owned a little piece of a cupcake shop until this past year. We wouldn't leave buttercream frosting out. If there were cupcakes left over at the end of the night, they were either eaten or refrigerated.

Next time buy already made icing!

Choopa Phil 02-03-2015 09:51 AM

Sugar acts a preservative in icing, youre good for about 5-7 days. Google is your friend, instant answer via baking forum :)
