Most part depends on what sponsor you use, how their front and backend are designed and how aggressive they are in sending follow up promotion e-mails once your surfer gives them their e-mail address for the "free profile"

Converting an offer definitely has to do with the offer but it also depends on the source of your traffic, your pitch to the customer and what type of payout/offer you are promoting. PPL, PPS and trials will make a difference in your bottom line as well.
