I fear I have to reply to this. I love 'new school' punk. I personally didn't label it this way. I can understand that there is a BIG diffrence and that a lot of old schoolers get offended. I don't jump on bands because other people like it. I like to think I listen to good music. I agree there is alot of garbage out there, but don't pay attention to any of that crap, that stuff is marketed pre-packaged bullshit.

So what am I to do? Stop listening to music I like, or call it some new term that no one will understand.

I fucking can't stand genres. Everything is broken down to acidcorehiphopnewrockabillytrancepunk.

I simply like to call it Old school and New school.

Having said all this I hope you can understand where I am comming from.

I don't mind the new stuff... if'n they know how to respect the old stuff....

I got some friends from the olden days who think the kids these days don't know shit... but I tell them... "well, shit, the Dead Kennedys aren't playing right now" and "there isn't a Black Flag" and "I don't think that they're expecting to see 999"

Point is, the kids these days, I'm happy as long as they know what the "punk" thing is about.... not the MTV pseudo alternative semi-rebellious thing, but the true 'think for yourself' thing.

So when I hear my friends say "these kids don't know shit" I tell him, "of course they don't have the bands that you worship playing for them, but they're doing the best they can for what they've got"

And that's about it.

Punk's not about scaring people with your mohawk at the local McDonald's.

Punk's in yer head. Thinking for yourself and not letting any bullshit influences seep in.

Sorry for going so astray in these rantings, but I'm blasted.... woo my Girl just shotgunned my lungs out YEEE HARRR

Libertine 03-14-2003 06:32 AM

By no means is punk taking over at the moment. Crap is taking over.

And, I think it is safe to say that if you agree with popular culture and like the state, you are in fact not punk. Punk, by definition, is a rebellious counterculture group. This can mean many things, but not being a nice little pop bitch.

whats your problem? she is a solo singer that sings manufactured music for the masses of young people. its not punk and its not labelled punk. i have been into punk rock for the last 5 years (since i was 14) and i appreciate most music. i listen to both old school and new school. old blink and offspring got me into punk and once your into it its fuckin great finding out about the older bands. so who gives a shit what avril or new found glory are doin. it aint punk so quit ya bitchin and dont listen to it. if the boppers didnt have this to listen to then what the fuck would they listen to? punk? top 10 punk bands for me are:

strung out
pennywise
minor threat
nofx
the unseen
the exploited
the casualties
bigwig
fugazi
lagwagon

OK, now check out Roger Miret and the Disasters.
New band on the Epitaph label.

Theyre a new band. Must be New School, but look who the singer is.

Which way do you go on that one?

[Labret] 03-14-2003 08:31 AM

If its on Epitaph, its now top 40. The label of middle america mall punk.

stick with streetpunk and oi, its relatively untainted. skinheads will never be pretty and popular.

I've always been into the underdogs too, used to see Op Ivy at Gilman all the time, cant stand Rancid. So I totally agree with you in general, but check this out-

The Disasters

And for whatever its worth I know that Agnostic Front tours all the time. I saw their 20th anniversary show at CBGBs a couple of months ago. Great show.

I'm trying to get the fuck off my high horse, and quit calling a band sell outs just because they become successful. Can you tell?

That video on their site was painful to watch. Ill give Roger credit where credit is due, Agnostic Front, enough said. But too watch him spiral into some Rancid knockoff, that pains me.

Ive seen AF a few times, always a good time. I still rush the stage for the sing along for "crucified".

:2 cents:

Bored 03-14-2003 01:09 PM

There is a big diffrence between what you see on tv and what you hear through recommendation. The big mainstream media market machine knows how to make money and exploits it at every angle. Sometimes its with punk, sometimes its with rap, sometimes it a mix of two things or more. Whatever that is its pretty easy to identify.

As I got older and mp3's got popular I realized one thing.
CD's are a big waste of money for the most part. Why? Because they've been marketed to sell. They take a band, fancy them up, make sure they have 1 or 2 songs that can sell, burn that song into your head by way of radio and tv and other nonsense. When you finally wanna hear more you guy buy the cd only to realize that those songs are the only good things on there and you don't really need to buy the cd because you hear the song EVERYWHERE. People are stupid

Avril, good charlotte punk? Perhaps. Is it good music? Thats up to the individual once they understand how this media market machine works.

It makes me sick sometimes to see how blindly people follow music.

People like different things for different reasons. Most people like music because it sounds good to them. They like it because their friends like it, or their parents played it for them, or they heard it at a concert. Not everybody wants to make a statement with the music they enjoy.

:2 cents:

Bored 03-14-2003 01:24 PM

Oh I understand that completely, I do that myself even. It just seems like moreso lately people see something on tv and its not even the music that makes them like the band.

Yeah .. but that is how society is today .. I mean, thats how kids are exposed to music .. mostly MTV.

Of course the record companies realized this, and the earning potential of good looking lead singers, and thats what they feed to kids today. Nothing you can really do about it, just educate the kids you can get your hands on. Drive around in your car playing Screeching Weasel and the Dead Kennedys as loud as you can!

Its the MOOO factor.

If everyone else likes it, or I am told everyone else likes it, then I should like it. What is popular is good, right? I mean, its popular for a reason right?

Well I think there's now 3 kind of "punk"
1- the original punkband you are all talking about (exploited, black flag, ramones etc..)
2- punkrock...bands like Lagwagon, Nofx, No use for name, Strung Out etc.. (which is what I mostly listen too)
3- the new "pop-punk" wave ...like Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Something Corporate etc... which I wouldn't even call punk, and can't stand....

But it's all a matter of taste....

The thing with the "Pop-Punk" bands .. is that they grew up listening to the punk rock you like, and the pop of their generation and has come up with something totally their own. Which if you are not really open minded to commercialized music, you might not enjoy so much.

Can't we just be happy this kind of music exists? I mean at least some kid some where is listening to Good Charlotte and might decide they want to hear the bands that influenced them.

Its all good .. really :)

[Labret] 03-14-2003 02:05 PM

3 kinds?

pop punk is an oxymoron.

2 and 3 are not even punk. They are all Epitaph bands or Fatwreck style "punk". Corporate "punk". Every band listed is one video away from being top 40.

There is in addition, and off the top of my head... crust, oi, streetpunk, skoi, hardcore, skapunk, skate, etc etc. And each one of those can be subniched to absurdity. Core can be broken down into about 20 niches alone.

DrGuile 03-14-2003 02:07 PM

Well I was mostly reffering to the term "punk" because that's what people refer them to...I know most of these bands have nothing to do with whole punk mentality as it was when it started...

What bother me is people who listen to this ONLY and mostly because they are popular band...I do like some popular bands but it's because I like the music for what it is and I would probably listen to'em even if they weren't popular... i'm very open-minded in music...(remember Quo Vadis?.. i like this kinda stuff too... :thumbsup )

Ska sucks is a good song, Ill give them that one.

SilverTab 03-14-2003 02:21 PM

It also depends on what you are looking for in the music...
If you listen to a band because of their mentalitty it's one thing...I focus on the music...and I found LagWagon to be way more technical than bands like Ramones or Exploited... Musically speaking....I listen to it if I like it and I think it sounds good

...They have their own lablel. Publish music that wont be heard on MTV ever. They dont do videos. They do a lot of benefit concerts. and a lot of their new songs are hardcore punk (I didnt say "hardcore", dont go nuts).

Ska sucks is close to being their worst song.

also, they are the only people that marry old school metal with new school punk.

Of course, being the limited individual you are, you'll discard it as crap before it even starts...

Also, they have the greatest line ever... pretty much, and it applies to you [labret]:

"And yes, I recognize the irony that the very system I oppose affords me the luxury of biting the hand that feeds. But that's exactly why priviledged fucks like me should feel obliged to whine and kick and scream- until everyone has everything they need. "
