Why do popular social networks like Facebook hire so many programmers?

Why can't they just have 1 programmer instead of a whole department?

TheSquealer 11-03-2014 08:39 PM

How many programmers do you think Google should have? About 5?

Five? That's a lot of dead weight. They could likely go with two and some interns part time to cut costs... :1orglaugh

L-Pink 11-03-2014 08:42 PM

Good point. If they need more they can just call a temp agency.

freecartoonporn 11-03-2014 08:42 PM

bcoz they need them.

DBS.US 11-03-2014 08:51 PM

If you had unlimited money and need the job done yesterday, how many would you have?

xNetworx 11-03-2014 10:25 PM

1 is way too many. Zero would be a better idea.

Why do they even need a programmer? They could probably run everything off wordpress and if they really needed something custom they could install some plugins, or maybe hire a temp programmer off odesk.

Facebook is programmed in many different languages, an individual programmer won't know every language, so Facebook require at least one programmer per language i.e. 1 English, 1 Spanish, 1 French, 1 Arabic, 1 Chinese etc. :2 cents:

i still think when you hire too many they start coming up with bullshit changes just to justify their existence - not because it makes things better

Great thread :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

I thought this was a troll question when I saw it on BHW (Mosic)...
But now I see you posting the same question here...

If you need to ask such a question then you have little understanding of scale or the complexities involved.

Sounds like bad management to me.

iSpyCams 11-04-2014 09:11 AM

You need one to tell you how what you are asking for is impossible.

This is your department head.

Then you need 5 or 6 more to tell you how he's wrong and then try to prove it and get nowhere.

Then you need a designer who knows a little PHP to show you the real solution.

Then you need the others to tell you what an idiot the designer is and point out all the security flaws in his work.

Then you need a second team to fix the security flaws in the designers code.

Then you need the first team to tell you what an idiot the second team is and mock their code and decry their documentation.

Then the team leader sits there and tells you "OK but just remember I warned you sql is gonna crash with that many queries"

Then the designer simplifies the sql queries and everyone else pretends not to notice.

trolling is an art

Roald 11-04-2014 09:28 AM

I don't get it either, it's not like they have millions of users or something.

dyna mo 11-04-2014 09:48 AM

I'll be the first to answer-

the reason they hire so many programmers is because they release new code every day, 2x a day.

Quote:

Facebook updates the site with new features, product improvements, and bug fixes every work day. This can sometimes be a huge challenge, given that there are hundreds of engineers working on thousands of changes every week, and many of those changes immediately impact the over 800 million people using Facebook worldwide. But Chuck Rossi, who has worked in release engineering for over 20 years and started as Facebook's very first release engineer in 2008, helps make it all happen. Read on to learn about the team behind the daily push and the tools and processes they built to make it possible.

think one guy could run all this?

mineistaken 11-04-2014 01:51 PM

Well since Indians from freelancer.com can create facebook clones in 3 weeks it surely looks strange to have more than 1, knowing that only tweaking of fb is needed :)

Matt 26z 11-04-2014 03:41 PM

They use employment bloat as a means of keeping good talent away from potential future competition.
