I really like this camera - although I cannot compare it to the d1x - as I have not ever used a d1x :)

The only digital cameras that I have experience with are the Olympus e10 and e20 and there is no comparing this Nikon to either of those two cameras - it simply leaves them in the dust. If your looking for a really good Nikon thats not only affordable but does good quality shit - the D100 is your camera.
