Dutch man turns amputated leg into a lamp, tries to sell it on eBay

A Dutch man turned his amputated leg into a lamp and tried to auction it off on eBay with a starting bid of $80,000.

But he was soon stopped from selling the bizarre light through the site, as it breached its policy that bans the sale of human body parts.

Leo Bonten, 53, is now looking for another way to offload his former limb.

And he wants to use the cash he eventually generates to pay off medical debts and then set up a foundation to help other fellow amputees deal with their condition.

Bonten's right leg was surgically removed in June 2014 after he developed a serious infection following a kiddie pool accident that saw him shatter several bones two years earlier.

Bacteria targeted his knee joint and ate away at his bone ? leaving him with a dead, stiff limb that needed to be amputated.

When discussing the upcoming operation with doctors, he says he had a "flash of inspiration" to turn his soon-to-be lopped off limb into a lamp.

Medics initially dismissed his idea, saying the hospital was responsible for the disposal of the leg and that it would be incinerated.

But Bonten fought the decision and was eventually given the go-ahead to keep it.

"My leg is my property. People keep kidney stones in a jar on the mantelpieces. Ashes of dead people are included in tattoos. I'm going to make a lamp of my leg," he told NRC Reader.

Pathologist Frank van de Goot preserved the limb following the surgery.

Lighting designer Willem Schaperkotter then turned it into a lamp by fixing it in formaldehyde inside a large cylindrical container.

Bonten said he was nervous to see the lamp for the first time. But he said it was now helping him deal with the loss.

"I know I will never run again but the fact that I still have the leg helps me deal with the loss, particularly if I can sell it and use the money to buy a bionic leg," he told The Mirror.

I tell my husband often that his people will happily sell their first born if it means making a buck.

He never denies it.

is it morbid to want to know the details of the 'kiddie pool accident that saw him shatter a few bones' eventually leading to infection and amputation?

i mean, i like http://i.imgur.com/9AsQFuJ.gif as much as the next guy, but there seems to be, missing parts, of the story..

Well, he should 've discuss this idea with a famous artist, attach his art on this amputated leg, make it at least something worth a while not just a rotten leg with some molding cuz that looks freaking men.

Or preserve it with salt and make it into the famous "Sour Toe" cocktail.
