ello.co

Does anyone use it?

If so is it any good?

Apparently it is a stripped down and CLEANER version of Facebook. Facebook's been MESSING AROUND so much with user data and privacy is a hassle to manage that I'm not surprised ello is doing so well.

If anyone has an invite, hook me up!

Sly 09-25-2014 05:17 PM

Today is the first time I've heard of it, and I have heard of it at least five times today. No shit.

It's blowing up. Definitely. I visit liberal, conservative, and libertarian sites and ello's all over the place. Facebook backlash maybe?

Creatine 09-25-2014 06:23 PM

I won't lie. It looks awful. Considering it's created by graphic designers it should look so much better.

Either way I'll try to request an invite. If people are using it maybe I can use it to drive some traffic.

I am a designer myself (primarily an illustrator), and this hipster design trend is pretentious as fuck.

Look at this shit, how can you make the simplest fucking design into something pretentious and complex:
https://ello.co/bergerfohr/post/FMTaoxbhwfBEcyqMuJalJg

Found this via this same designer... 'modern' graphic design is all about 2d / simplicity. I like that. But this designer is ultra simple... Also nothing wrong with that. But don't make it out to be rocket science when it's just slapping together a few shapes and letters! Check out this ultra pretentious essay-long argumentation of trying to sell a simple shit logo by coming up with arguments and explanations... Looks like 'graphic designer' is becoming less and less a real designer and more and more a professional bullshitter!

It really is dreadful - I'm not going to bother with that...

TeenCat 09-26-2014 05:56 AM

people are really fucked up ...

Sly 09-26-2014 07:16 AM

I just looked at the site for the first time.

I agree with what you guys are saying.

Form and function can play together. Settling for one is laziness. And in this case, the form is awful, so Ello has neither.

ClickCashEmily 09-26-2014 08:58 AM

It's not only hipster design, but it's not intuitive. I have an Ello account, but only to see what the fuss is about. I would be un-surprised if it went the way of other "Facebook Killers" (I'm looking at you, Orkut). It's raising buzz now mostly because you need an invite to join - you can't just signup. Exclusivity breeds the "omg I haz to have this" feeding frenzy.

But I do sorta dig the "friends" vs "noise" labels. And it will be nice to see updates as they happen, versus when the algorithm decides I'm most likely to click on them.

http://betabeat.com/2014/09/ello-wil...-says-founder/

Update #1: Overwhelmed by the deluge of new users, Ello almost choked off all access for new members, but have gone all-hands-on-deck to keep Ello alive and soldier on through the hype.

Update #2: Brands are showing up like crazy to make profiles on Ello — here’s why it won’t ruin everything.
When we broke the news about Ello, a new social network that claims to be the safe haven from its fiendishly invasive competition, it mostly fell on deaf ears — but the past six months were nothing compared to what’s happened in the past 24 hours.

Since the sudden Facebook exodus to Ello, requests to join went from 4,000 to 27,000+ per hour, Twitter exploded with desperate requests for invites, eBay responded with an enormous black market for invites, and Ello became the fifth hottest trend on Google searches. No big deal.

Beyond the tongue-in-cheek quips that compared Ello’s sudden success to the hype around Diaspora or Google+, some people had legitimate concerns about the unexpected contender in the social media sphere. Mainly, their concerns were that users would be banned for posting porn, there wasn’t going to be an option for private profiles, and that eventually, Ello was doomed to sell out and become the kind of ad-driven monstrosity they claim to despise.

So we spoke to Ello founder Paul Budnitz to clear the air, and it turns out, none of that is really true.

I dont know what is a fuss with facebook ads - if you dont like ads,use the fucking adblock extension.Plus,an idea with having no ads but having a large user base it's not a best idea, twitter still loses money due that right ?

Orkut was huge before Facebook. But yeah I get the point. I do think we are ready for something new though.

Running a business without money either: a) needs investors, or b) will fail.

With them harping on and on about it being revenue generation free, what would an investor be interested in?

The site will either die because they don't have the money anymore or they will find a way to monetize it, with ads. :winkwink:

fetishwealth 09-29-2014 09:34 AM

Ello took venture capital funding.

Pretty much all you need to know about it really.

Mickey_ 09-29-2014 09:48 AM

I've tested it, not impressed. Tries too hard (including the ultra minimalistic design).

I don't think it will ever go mainstream, but time will tell. :)

And yes, as fetishwealth said, they took VC money.

I never did and never will understand what's wrong with a company wanting to make money for its stakeholders while providing value (multiple FREE services) to its users. Then again, I'm not too much into this neo-hippie entitled 'free-for-all' BS and choose to live in reality instead. ;)

Zester 09-29-2014 12:15 PM

ok, can somebody please send me an invite in a private message please ?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29409541

Social media network Ello is currently receiving up to 31,000 requests an hour from people wishing to join its platform, its founder has told the BBC.

It was initially designed to just be used by about 90 friends of its founder Paul Budnitz.

But the bike shop owner, from the US state of Vermont, opened it to others on 7 August.

It has been dubbed the "anti-Facebook" network because of a pledge to carry no adverts or sell user data.

However some experts have cautioned that it might struggle with plans to charge micro-payments for certain "features".

The site has a minimalist design and does not appear as user-friendly, at first glance, as more established networks.

I agree 100%. This WE WANT YOUR SHIT FOR FREE WITH NO ADS is the PIRATE attitude. And I know how much everyone here hates pirating.

If you use AdBlock of any sort you are no better then pirates. You are stealing bandwidth in a sense from websites.

Facebook has ads to be provide you with a stable service. Without the ads they may have to limit you on the amount of images you're able to upload to save money. They may have to cut staff. The service would be worse.
