Hoe smuggler gets sentenced

LOS ANGELES - The ring-leader of a group that smuggled hundreds of Ukrainian immigrants into the United States, selling some to prostitution, was sentenced monday to 17 years in federal prison.
The group, allegedly led by Serge Mezheritsky smuggled at least 400 Ukrainians into the United States through Mexico, concealing them in cars and aboard boats, or sneaking them across unfenced parts of the border.
Most of the immigrants paid $7000 in smuggling fees. Some of the women in the group were told they could pay their smuggling fees by working as baby sitters, models, actresses, but were later sold to pimps, prosecuters said.
