I don't know what impact it's going to have, but if it works even half as well as it says, then it's going to get sales...

Pipecrew 03-11-2003 04:41 PM

Hardly....... Are they going to claim they are only stealing public domain content? Only takes 1 good lawsuit and they are fucked..... I am sure someone will want to see "bangbus" videos sometime and image slurp will steal them....... and then its goodbye!

juicybucks 03-11-2003 04:43 PM

nah, surely it can't take stuff from members areas ....

I would think .htaccess'ing your paysite images would stop this stuff?? Glorified Kaazza

$149.95? They won't be in business long. They will never be able to deliver what they promise, and will be chargebacked out of existance.

EscortBiz 03-11-2003 04:44 PM

RackSpace is hosting them lol

YEP, we should send them a few changebacks to get started.

There are lots of them coming out and some are less than 50 bucks. Many work very well and DO deliver what they promise.

i don't see how these spiders could snag anything other than sample media from sites... its certainly not going through our s c r i p t-based authentication gateway..! haven't these things been around forever, or am i thinking of nntp spiders..?

hottoddy 03-11-2003 05:17 PM

Yeah, these pic downloaders have been around for ever. They promise to scour the web, at your directions, and return gigs of stuff by morning. It works pretty well for the free stuff.

k, thats what i figured... the wording they are using to push their service is probably a bit misleading to their potential customers... i'm sure some morons will think this is a free ticket into any paysite..

PixRipper looks like a simple web spider like Teleport Pro or something. From reading the imagesurp site it seems as though the concept is a little different.

$149.95 aint free porn, heh ;)

3 Thoughts:
1)I don't think very many people are going to be plopping down their CCs for $149 piece of porn software.

2)It doesn't sound like you can actually 'request' anything specific, rather you set categories, media types, and download limits and let it run. My guess is they just spider the top 5 TGPs every day and bleed that file list to users when the program runs. The software can only access the same things that a regular browser can access. htaccess holds up no matter what piece of shit software is requesting resources.

3)Its perfectly legal. These guys are not publishing or stealing copyright material at all. They are simply selling a special purpose browser that is fundamentally not very different than any other auto-downloader or even IE or NS for that matter.

I remember once we found that people were signing up for our sites, and using some kind of program to download everything in the member's area.... Well, we found a quick way to shut that crap down. All you need to do is hide a bunch of links in your HTML that leads to all kinds of stuff they don't want to see.....

I guess the thing is, wont take as many sales of it to make some decent $$$ so conversion ratios aren't *that* important. Second point has merit too, if your shit is protected then I doubt they can access it. And thirdly, there are already heaps of specific browsers for all sorts of content, so no, its not illegal at all. All the best to them I say.

Probably like this site that spiders all the TGPs for gallery listings and logs them for themselves...
http://www.tgfind.com/

DannyW 03-12-2003 03:50 AM

Hi,

Just using the .htaccess user agent to block spider programs is no guarantee of preventing more sophisticated products. When we developed the "PicSniffer Adult Browser" (which was a much more sophisticated automatic browser and viewer) we simply set the agent string so it would look like an IE browser, and we could get at any agent or hotlink protected content. They won't get into password or script protected sites though.

We presented PicSniffer to the adult community, then dumped it before going to market - principally because the adult market made it clear they wouldn't market it, secondly because if it had been as successful as we hoped it would have done real damage especially to video gallery owners. (It was mostly the first reason, but I also didn't want to be a complete asshole if I could avoid it!).

Without strong marketing from within the adult community, these software products won't gain a foothold. That's your best defence. Trying to block them with simple .htaccess agent protection, or referrer protection, is a waste of time if they are even vaguely cheeky about things like agent strings.

So, concentrate your efforts on commercial barriers against these products, not simple technical ones.

Just for the record, we're now working on software solutions that benefit the industry AND the surfer, and we've got the mofo of all inventions coming out in a month or two that will wipe out any such leeching systems while bringing fresh new money into the industry.

Danny

Why 03-12-2003 03:55 AM

something tells me the guy who posted this is somehow linked to that website. as he sure knows a lot on the subject.

DannyW 03-12-2003 03:59 AM

Incidentally, much as a I hate amateur lawyers, this might be interesting as a legal weapon against this type of program:

http://www.loc.gov/copyright/legislation/dmca.pdf

If the leeching program is obtaining access to the substantial value of your site (eg your pictures), while robbing you of the opportunity to gain your advertising and revenue, you may have a strong case against them.

Danny.

There's no secret about our involvement with PicSniffer, the now-defunct PicSniffer site links directly to the IPB site, and I think there's even a reference to picSniffer on the IPB site.

But I can categorically state that we have nothing to do with this most recent leeching product, or any other such product. That would be pretty stupid of me to come here offering you advice if I did!

Who cares?

If it makes you $75 a signup and sells as well as your shitty porn sites?

Reminds me of the guy who shot his balls off to keep from getting drafted!

andi_germany 03-12-2003 05:42 AM

1. This is absolutely legal. If you offer something for download it is the same if someone uses Netscape or IE to get it or an offline browser. It's as simple as that. They cannot get into a password protected area unless that site is joined first. Then the download is as legal as before. If you offer pictures and forbit the download of the surfer and think that would work you are deluted.

2. Those programms are around for ages and they are working fine. You can set referer addresses and mask yourself as coming in with IE or other browsers.

3. There is a simple way to prevent those progs to leach your members section. Call the links thru a cgi script. This will work for the 99% of offline browser users. There is a way to even bypass cgi and form linking but I will not disclose that here to give people the idea.

4. This won't be successful because it is to expensive. Noone who wants free porn pays 150 bucks.

pentae 03-16-2003 07:40 PM

I just thought i'd dig up this thread again to prove a few people in here wrong.

I gave this program a go last week, and over the last 5 days I have sent (up to date) 6,122 uniques, and I have made 8 sales.

at $74.97 a signup (on ibill revshare) i've made $599.80 off this traffic. If i'd sent that to a $35 per signup site, I probably would have gotten a similar amount of sales, but made far less dough.

This is fucking unbelievable. The last time i made this kind of money was when Evidence Eliminator was 'new' and 'fresh'.. before it was saturated.

I think the reason it signs up well, is the shock factor of the $149.95 price tag.. people think that because it costs so much it must actually be really really good.

This works. :thumbsup

As I thought it would. :)

I am the pioneer who dared to try something new.. now who wants to toss my salad? :winkwink:

You people clearly underestimate the stupidity of the consumer.

If i sent that 6122 uniques to you, how much money would I make Pornkings?

Can you beat the revenue i've made with this "overpriced tgp leecher" ?

I doubt it.
