M.O.A.B. -- the mother of all bombs

Just watched a segment on CNN about this bomb..... it sounds pretty wild....

http://www.dawn.com/2003/03/07/top18.htm

<i><b>"The Pentagon says the ordnance possibly earmarked for Iraq includes a new kind of weapon - nicknamed "the mother of all bombs." Considered the biggest bomb in the US conventional arsenal, it weighs 21,000 pounds.

Like its predecessor, the "daisy cutter," the bomb's blast would create a huge mushroom cloud. "</b></i>

Some military guy being interviewed on CNN said that the mushroom cloud would go up thousands of feet and look a lot like a nuclear hit. I wonder if they'll use it once on an Iraqi army position to hopefully cause the remaining Iraqi military to give up. It would make for one of the shortest wars in history if it worked.

I posted a story on this a week ago or so. They said they are dropping the bomb outside of anywhere important for shock value. Our tax money at work.

Demoralize troops. Force more surrenders. Less fighting. Less casualties. It's a plan. Might work on the non-Republican Guard soldiers.

I remember a Moab Kingdom mentioned in the Bible. Any connection?

If it served to have a few hundred thousand Iraqi troops surrender rather than having to be killed, thus shortening the war....... I would think it would be money well spent and not subject to ridicule.

I felt it in Atlanta, GA. It shook the house. Kinda like a sonic boom.
Very Impressive.

Also, unlike it's predecessor the "bunker buster", this bomb is apparently self-guided, like the cruise missile.... it doesn't have to be dropped by a b-52.

Anyone have any information on the scope of dammage it can do? I imagine it would have incredible impact dammage on anything in the blast's path over a large area. But how large?

It cannot be dropped by a B-52. It is dropped from a transport just as is the Daisy Cutter. I saw a media report that stated a killing radius of 300-900 yards depending upon the terrain. Outside of that range its concussive effect comes into play and causes brain concussions, burst ear drums, and provides a severe headache and disorientation, which is an understatement. I don't have alot of confidence that the media report is correct as they often get it wrong when reporting about weapons of war. I did hear COL Hackworth say, during the Afghan operation, that the "fuel air bomb" which is what the MOAB is, could take out a Regiment of Infantry that is deployed in a standard deployment configuration (once again depending upon terrain). A Regiment normally consists of 3200-5000 warm bodies.

Thanks King... and might I add..... holy shit.

ha ha

big fucking bomb man.

From the CNN article online..... "The MOAB is deployed on a pallet from a C-130 aircraft. It initially has a parachute, but as it deploys, the Inertial Navigation System and Global Positioning System take over. The bomb also has wings and grid fins for guidance."
