Ukraine: Russian tank column enters southeast
 

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? A column of Russian tanks and armored vehicles entered southeastern Ukraine around dawn Monday, a Ukrainian official said ? a move that brings the conflict to an area that has so far escaped the intense fighting of recent weeks.

The reported incursion came a day ahead of a summit that includes both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, and could be aimed at pressuring Ukraine into seeking a negotiated end to the conflict rather than a military victory.

Over the past month, Ukrainian forces have made substantial inroads against pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine, taking control of several sizeable towns and cities that had been under rebel control since April, when the clashes began.

But the advances have come at a high cost ? more than 2,000 civilians reportedly killed and at least 726 Ukrainian servicemen. There is no independent figure for the number of rebel dead, although Ukrainian authorities said Monday that 250 rebels were in fighting around Olenivka, a town 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of Donetsk.

those are not Russian tanks. That is counter offensive of local forces, but stupid Ukrainians think that their border patrol would stop Russian tank offensive. Silly.

Sorry, but I really do not consider you interlocutor.Your question above is just one more proof for that. I guess reason for that is because you are taking news on one side only . If you are not aware that tanks and guns were captured and how many people defected from army and how big is population in eastern part of country, that was (until recently) part of Ukraine, I do not have comment.

Yes, they have captured some guns and tanks, but they have made war for months and have had significant casualties. They haven't captured hundreds of tanks/ armoured vehicles as far as I know. From who they would have captured that much vehicles anyways? Were there (in that region) that much Ukraine troops to begin with?

Having big population doesn't have anything to do with this, unless you suggest that some significant enough percentage of the population did posses tanks/ armoured vehicles before this conflict.

I barely avoided for being AFV gunner (not Soviet). I thought to mention as we got to talk about driving tanks (well, it's not driving, it's gunning). :)

As usually, ignorance is what is dominating in your posts. There were no hundreds of tanks, but up to 10 vehicles . Who can be so stupid to think Russians would attack with 10 tanks? WTF? ..anyway, when I mention population, it means that it has regular army troops as every other part of Ukraine, which means guns, tanks, etc....that is not desert but a part of country. If you can't make conclusion like that on your own,I really don't have what to tell you.

As Richard said above, this is pointless. People are dying and it was peaceful country until violent coup d'etat happened. I am sorry for ordinary people there (on both sides).

By hundreds of tanks/ vehicles I referred to the total amount of vehicles captured, that is important factor when determining the rebels strength (unless they have been resupplied). Also based on news there were more than 10 vehicles and I didn't talk about attack. Maybe the Russians were just resupplying rebels?

Besides being armchair general, I am just squad leader, but leader nevertheless, and I know that war requires serious amounts of resources just to be able to sustain fighting. This comes even more important if there are significant casualties. So, it is very valid question, that from where does the rebels supply come from, in terms of food, guns, vehicles and ammunition.

There was multiple convoys of armored vehicles, dozens each time. At this point, close to one hundred armored vehicles and tanks have crossed.

This doesn't make any sense. At some point in time a tank will be disabled or partially destroyed, and they will be able to tell it is not a Ukrainian tank. They will be able to trace it all the way back to Russia.

There was no "violent coup d'etat" - there was no violence and there was no coup d'etat. The president was removed by their Parliament or whatever they call it there. We call it impeachment. There was no coup d'etat, he was removed, and then fled the country.

I did get it, I just mentioned about my personal "almost tanker" experiences. And I wasn't joking, I really didn't want to be tanker. Tank is basically a big canister of fuel around you.

I ridiculed some posters who stupidly or naively claimed Russians did not invade/support/have stake in this war few weeks or month ago.

There are many Russians people were living in Ukraine before collapse of the Soviet Union.

There 50% Russian population in Donetsk. Population around 1 million people can make their own army of 500-2000 rebels and remain strong with defense.
