Green energy = dead birds

Vendzilla was right! Hundreds of thousands of birds (potentially) a year from one plant, holy crap. That's a lot of California Fried Crow.

What spans 1,600 hectares, cost $2.2 billion to build, and potentially fries hundreds of thousands of birds per year? The new BrightSource solar power plant in California?s Mojave Dessert.

all for it, tired of them shitting on my car after a fresh wash. :2 cents:

L-Pink 08-20-2014 12:09 PM

That's fucked up.

2MuchMark 08-20-2014 12:17 PM

Wow that's insane... those poor birds!

I wonder what could be done from an engineering point of view. Some kind of cover above the focal point protecting birds that may fly over it? Or maybe some kind of ultrasonic noise maker that scares birds away?

Jasminevsmedia 08-20-2014 12:25 PM

Wow, that sucks!

aka123 08-20-2014 12:33 PM

Apparently not very "green" energy. That definition doesn't cover every shit.

So how many birds-per-mile does your Volt get?

From engineering point of view: not to build huge boilers outdoors. Everything fries in there, the birds are just the tip of a iceberg.

Yeah, in China they declared war against sparrows. Result = famine or two. Clueless bastards didn't really get the concept of ecosystem.

you want to cover the solar panels?

woj 08-20-2014 01:00 PM

"Workers at the Ivanpah solar power plant call these birds “streamers,” as they ignite in midair and plummet to the ground trailing smoke."

Bladewire 08-20-2014 01:05 PM

This is just propaganda to get support for the testing of the first experimental plasma shields.

"We will be implementing an experimental plasma shield in an effort to save the birds" a future headline will read no doubt :2 cents:

love the article title

".. IS ACTUALLY DEATH RAY INCINERATING BIRDS"

:1orglaugh like it's some devious plan on purpose from a darth vader CEO

TampaToker 08-20-2014 03:20 PM

"Back in January, it was estimated that — in the US alone — between 365 million and 988 million birds are killed every year by crashing into windows. We’re mostly talking about domestic, low-rise windows, too — not skyscrapers. Likewise, a study last year showed that domestic cats — yes, your beloved Fluffy — are killing more than a billion birds per year in the US."

Kinda like with those dumb bastards spill coal ash in the river ways, or oil tankers spill millions of gallons into the oceans...

shake 08-20-2014 04:41 PM

Maybe they could add a few wind turbines, then they'd be chopped, cooked and ready to eat.

DDuckworth 08-20-2014 05:48 PM

Fairly simple solution though, just put up some nets at the heights where the solar power is focused, I doubt you'd lose that much efficiency and the birds would be fine to land on the nets, as long as they were above the concentrated ray areas.

seeandsee 08-21-2014 01:52 AM

they know what would happened, they dont care

nets? if the birds are frying at those heights then... nevermind...

brassmonkey 08-21-2014 08:49 AM

sounds like free lunch

Bladewire 08-21-2014 09:00 AM

They built the plants on a plain right in the middle of the birds migratory path to a lake, and they want to build an even bigger plant, on the same migratory path. This could be a big problem.

Killing a few birds who gives a fuck but frying all the birds on their migratory path to water, through the desert, means those species are fucked :food-smil02

You forgot to mention Fox News, Sarah Palin, and the Tea Party.

Try again.
