I Just Don't Understand Board Asshats

So I'm always amazed how some people can be total asshats on the boards and not realize it costs them business.

If you're a shitty web designer, desperate for work, bitter at life for all your failures you probably shouldn't be acting like an idiot on GFY. Being nice will get you more clients.

Or

If you're a terrific web designer with plenty of clients, making money hand over fist and don't care about getting work from GFY. Well then I hope the day comes that everything in your life falls apart and you come here looking for work only to find that you alienated yourself being an asshat. Nothing lasts forever...

I just refuse to believe that being an asshat on GFY for attention gets more business than somehow getting that same attention in a positive way. It's the lazy mans marketing method.

I guess I just prefer polite people, even when it comes to board personas.

I couldn't agree more - I am all about playing and having a great time, but not really much into the whole "slapping my chest" kind of thing - that just really never has seemed very productive to me - even if I find things that I could REALLY be nasty about, I refrain from it - in as much as the people who are members and post here, I'd rather be seen as having some sort of a brain and dignity to the ones that aren't. ;)

Easy to say until you deal with crazy. I hired a designer off this board 2 years ago, someone who does great work and came recommended. They can be a bit combative on here, drama queen.

Person was a nightmare to deal with. Call's morning, noon and night about ideas for the website that were well outside of the scope of the agreed upon project. Call's regarding things in his personal life - money problems, girlfriend problems. Drunk emails at 3am.

If they had not been recommended I would not have used them based off their board personality. Wish I would have listened to my gut.

I have had the same experience. Always judge them by what they write on here. I understand that people have strong held beliefs/ideas/etc. Just watch out for those who always go to the other side or come off extreme to be extreme.

Surely it takes too much effort to post on a consistent basis in a manner that's not natural, for it to be worth it in the long run. There really seems to be no upside to posting like an ass unless you have no business to conduct on a forum or are......just an ass.

Note:being an asshat is not necessary to "reject" people.There is a thing called marketing 101,where with negative press you can actually get far far more business.Best offline example for that would be Howard Stern.Also,being nice = being unrecognizable so it's not always best to do that approach.
