Mac Pro desktop owners?
I run a Mac Pro, but at 12GB of RAM, it's falling behind the times. I'm looking at the new trash-can-looking Mac Pro. At a sticker price of $6,600, I could build a pretty ridiculous machine and slap OSX on it, a la candyflip. Has anyone gone the Mac Pro route, paid the $6,600, and been satisfied? Need some opinions before I buy.

Build custom and install osx, I was a critic to Hackintoshes but have 2 great machines running. I can give you specs for a $1 500 machine matching $6 000 mac pro

Otherwise just get an iMac, but I've heard you bitch about iMacs on here before being slow or garbage? Which I didn't understand at all, they're great machines, I've got a late 2010 that still does well, though I wish it had a SSD. New iMacs can support up to 32GB or RAM. |

buy a lenovo\hp workstation with same/better specs, at half the prize and Nextbusinessday onsite hardware support. But if you need the Mac OS, ignore my reply

I wouldn't pay close to 7k for a mac or any pc of that kind, mark up is ridiculous

From experience I'd go the Mac Pro if you need the number of cores. Alternatively get a top end i7 27" iMac and run two extra displays on it. You can put enough RAM into an 27" iMac to keep you happy and the price tag is lower.

But if you plan on doing videoediting on the mac, you should stick to Apple hardware, since the drivers are written specifically for that But if its for programming, I dont see a problem using HP/Lenovo HP is after all one of the large UNIX supporters |

motheboard - GIGABYTE GA-X79-UD5 memory - 32GB Corsair 1600Mhz DDR3 Graphics - GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2 SanDisk Extreme SATA 6Gb/s 120GB SSD case i use FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE R4 BLACK but is up to your taste In terms of speed is very fast i can edit 4k XAVc in real time which i cant do on my Imac 27" I5 3.2 |
I have been holding off buying the new MacPro's. They are super fast of course, but I found a different way.
I have 2 x iMac 27's on my desk. I connect them together to form a giant-sized desktop which is super useful of course. But with dual iMacs, you can also switch them back to "separate" machines with a key-click. So what I do is setup any rendering I need to do on 1 machine, get it started and then switch back to giant desktop mode. This lets me work as normal without any speed loss. Since the machine on my right drives both screens, while the machine on my left is busy doing the rendering, I can work as usual without any slow lagyness. This isn't as fast as the new Mac Pros, but its a very efficient use of the computers I think. I've never built a Hackintosh but it sounds like it would be a fun project, and if you save money at the same time, why not? |
I wonder what you guys do with your desktops that you need power like that
unless it's 4k video editing or hardcore Photoshop, it's money out of the window |

And just recently somebody told me computers never use more of 4 (or whole 8) GB of RAM in real life situations :)

Think this video describes the Mac Pro pretty well.

With the exception of mineistaken, who is invariably a moron, everyone has provided solid advice and perspective in this thread. I'm going to try my first Hackintosh. Going to swap my Macbook Pro for a Macbook Air on the laptop side as well.

I sent 10k for my Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro and loving it. I also gaming on my Mac Pro in boot camp. I think the best solution is 2 maxed out Imacs |
I just stopped in the Apple Store, I wanted to check out the 27 inch iMac and I saw the new Pro sitting next to it. Such a goofy looking thing. Was surprised how small it was.

Good call man. Holler if you need any help, but seeing as you've done this when it was a pain in the ass...you're not going to have any trouble with it now.

Finding a good looking case is going to be a challenge. Pretty much all plastic crap in the market.
