That was basically a warning of what is to come. A glitch caused some extra routes to be propagated globally for a brief period, increasing the size of the global routing table to more than 512k routes, which is the configured limit of some routers.

The global routing table is going to grow organically to, and past, that 512k count at some point in the near future.

More routing power then. Can't be that hard. Maybe all the phones and devices can do their bit too.

Internet routing is supposed to be resilient and able to use redundant paths, but it's really quite fragile. One router having a bad day can cause a knock-on effect which affects multiple routers across the 'net.

Even rebooting a router (for example, to change the memory config) involves a risk of a SNAFU, so it's not something that would be done routinely, although I would imagine there will be a lot of them rebooted in the near future :)
