Wordpress guys, I have a quick question

Long time no talk :)

Anyway, I have a question about Wordpress for those of you using it --

If I have a Multisite installation and I wanted to create a single 'library' (Media) of images on an unrelated URL, but then allow the multisites to 'import' those images from the main 'library' to the individual sites, is there an existing plug in that does that, and where would I find it?

Let me give an example in case I am not doing a good job explaining...

I have multiple small businesses who each have a site (Multisite install) and they want to use some graphics I own to make posts. I have stored these graphics in a big library on a domain (library.com) and I wish to allow the small businesses to go through my library, select the graphics they want to use and import them to their own Media for use in their blog posts. I do not want them to link to my library, but to put a copy of the image in their own library.

This needs to be administered really simply, since these business owners are not very good at Wordpress or even cut and paste, unfortunately. If they can 'select' an image in my library and automatically find it's been transferred to their library, that would be perfect.

Since my library is large (thousands of images), I do not wish to replicate it on each of the multisite Media installs, that would not make sense.

Hopefully someone here knows how or has written something like that?

If I need to spin around and dance a jig, then so be it... fris where are you?

Sounds like it'll do what you want. We use it and it works quite well... upload files via ftp and import using that plugin...

Thanks, but that's not the process I'm describing. I like Add from Server when you're pushing files that are too big for standard WP hosting places that limit file size uploads.

This is for blog entries done by people who have zero idea of how to blog or much past logging in and doing basic typing. I have a library of images that I want them to use in their posts, but I am not going to replicate this library on each users installation, that would be a waste of space and they'd never be able to find images to use easily with the default way that WP handles media.

create folder/domain/subdomain aliases on your apache or nginx configurations?...
or symlink of directory

KimmyKim, there are a lot of moving parts in what you described and I would venture to guess that there is no plugin available for it. I would say the easiest way to do it is to just have them right-click and save the image, then upload to their own media library.

The plugin would have to access your library, offer them an import option, then transfer the image from your WP library to theirs. That's not as easy as it sounds. Personally, I would create a portfolio that displays the images and an option to download. Then they can insert it into a post which automatically uploads it to their library. And if they don't know how to insert a photo into a post in WP, then you should probably take their website away from them. :)

I will have a look at that one vdbucks --

Rob - there are plug ins that do this if you have single site installs and want to import and store media on your blog instead of using a URL link to the image. We've got a multisite which is always the sticking point on most of this stuff.

I figured it was more likely that someone around here would have some kind of wpmu setup that had something developed than not, it's always been my previous experience that nobody automates and scales like adult coders.

KKayyyyyyyy

I know it's not what you want but the way i would do it is this: I would set up permissions on the "library" domain, then offer each client access to hotlink it at will vis-a-vie a surcharge added to whatever you're charging them now.

Really, how much hotlinking can a handful of as you said 'know-next-to-nothing' bloggers do? No big script required, you make enough to cover usage and then some, and they get unrestricted access for as long as they pay.

Of course once those know-nothings get comfortable with hotlinking they'll no doubt catch on to hotlinking from all manner of sites, and you'll have effectively trained your group into a clutch of content grabbers.

Nah, better go with the script. :D

ive done this with videos with videopress where each install can access my video collection.

to do this i would have to setup multisite and run a few tests, but it seems doable, just never had the need before or i would recommend a solution.

Ahahaha, only when the jib won't go up at the leeward mark!

Funny, Hazel and I were just having a conversation about how nothing really changes. Porn people are almost always one step ahead of the rest of the world with programming stuff, even if they don't do porn any more.
