Smartphones are making us antisocial

Actually, just the opposite.

However, the expectations of instantaneous gratification on the Internet in the information age is a real issue. We have gotten ahead of ourselves in many ways.

rockeru 08-04-2014 11:31 AM

I thought the same until I got one...

Klen 08-04-2014 11:40 AM

showing a metro/bus/whatever station is kind a bad example,i dont want to be bothered then one way or another.Tho using a smartphone when you are on party/meeting/anything similar is simply absurd.

I don't know is it very social to be in constant touch with your friends via electronic devices. Is this very social? I cannot use voice, I cannot use my body language, I can't properly show emotions, some fucking  doesn't do it, and I cannot feel the presence of another human being. This is maybe 1/4 of social from real face to face social interaction. So if I switch my face to face time to device to device time, I am actually only 1/4 social from what I used to be.

Penny24Seven 08-04-2014 03:46 PM

back in the day if the phone was busy I had to hop in my car and drive ten miles to see if my buddy was even home. Then if he wasn't because he was probably on the way to my house you are fucked LOL.
So toss your phones in the trash and go back to doing it that way.

RyuLion 08-04-2014 03:49 PM

I've been saying this since the I started seeing groups of people staring at their phones in 2007..

tony286 08-04-2014 04:01 PM

You see that when you go into a cafe. That's where people met and discussed ideas. Now its all people with their faces in their computers and phones.

CaptainHowdy 08-04-2014 05:09 PM

Guess I'm too broke to be antisocial ...

Op is not against regular cell phones that could help in your situation and no need to travel those ten miles.

Ecclesiastes 1:9

That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.

xxxjay 08-04-2014 09:28 PM

I've said that same thing millions of times

There's a fine line between checking a message and being at a party not in the moment. Those who are in touch with themselves and reality will know how to make a smartphone help them and not make them anti-social. It's like a tool.

aka123 08-05-2014 04:00 AM

Noo.. can't be. Knowing what my friends do every fucking second, that's social. :)

No, I am not talking about smartphones. I have installed tracking devices into my friends. This is the next big thing. :)

Jesse1984 08-05-2014 04:39 AM

Thank god, I could do with less people talking to me.

That's what's changing right now, people are no longer living in the moment. We are replacing our own personal experiences by recording those moments and uploading those experiences to the internet instead.

We're just being programmed to interact through technology so every piece of data in our lives is recorded. Google Glass and VR is coming very soon, which is the next step.

You're quite right that more intelligent people will use technology differently but those left in that minority are going to become increasingly frustrated by the world we'll be living in.

michael.kickass 08-05-2014 05:52 AM

Just wait until Google Glasses are massified.

Arnold [LB] 08-05-2014 07:16 AM

I don't have a smartphone, have been happy with my old samsung d780 for many years and not going to change.

This why we have GFY!

Scott McD 08-05-2014 09:11 AM

When we went out for a meal on Sunday, the dude at the table across from us took a pic of his food, then checked his fone again and again and told his wife/gf how many likes etc he was getting. This kept him amused while actually eating his fucking meal.

Incredible...

I've been guilty of that, but for beer!

I don't care how many likes I get and it's usually my girl that is having fun with that. She's been on a selfie thing lately.

Rather go out with friends and just have a good conversation.

See that's another thing i don't understand.

A person who took a hundred pics of themselves every day used to just be a cunt. Now because they call it a "selfie", it's cool all of a sudden.

Still makes you a cunt in my eyes... :2 cents:

Something baddog was doing years before it was considered cool

I only do it when I have a good background, like I have one with the great wall of china behind me, one with the forbidden city behind me. Then I can see it. My girl just loves to have pictures of the two us doing things.
We get out a lot, it's rare we stay at home on the weekends, it's too easy to just hop on the Harley and cruise up the coast or go to a motorcycle event or gathering.

Yup. Completely different scenario to the people taking "selfies" when they aren't actually doing anything or out anywhere. At least anywhere of interest anyway...

I think watching older people trying to figure out how to take pictures with their phone is funnier.

I get bored and there's no laptop, I play Clash of clans on my phone. I like strategy games.
The clan I'm in is called GFY, LOL

+1

Googles motivation and intention for that hardware is pretty clear. If Glass becomes as common place as smart phones, which given time is not inconceivable at all, when you considering how smartphones get used today, Glass is going to be a nightmare.

I guess you didn't actually read that page

"n conclusion, QI believes that Albert Einstein did not write or say any of the three variant quotations. Individuals who were aggravated by the behavior patterns of cell phone users probably facilitated the construction, evolution, and dissemination of this meme. The phrasing of the saying has changed over time and different sets of pictures have been attached. QI hypothesizes that the origination date was recent, perhaps as late as 2012. The efforts of the creators have been successful for now. The basic saying has achieved viral status with its dubious ascription."

Barry-xlovecam 08-05-2014 04:46 PM

They said the same thing about television 40 years ago ...

http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m3...12swo1_500.gif

Humans just found an interactive alternative screen to stare at that is highly portable.

Less contact with the now but more contact with the was. I have found a shitload of people from my past because of social networking. Not sure that's always good but I can tell you It's not so bad.

Obstinacy in a bad and smartphones obsession going too far.

"QI believes" Anyhow, that's only an blogger opinion. At officially wikiquote page and many other, you can see that Einstein's words. Said or not, that's the truth.

BettingHandle 08-06-2014 01:12 AM
