What the fuck is up with the retarded penguin joke that keeps reoccurring? I just finished season one, and they tell the punchline to that joke a lot of times, by different people, in different scenes. Does anyone know the entire fucking joke??? And what's the reasoning behind it on the show?

The reasoning is to make you think and make threads like this :). Theres no reason for it other than to pique your interest and keep you into the show.

They're always saying the punchline but never the joke. When they were doing a Red flashback, it's the joke she was telling the Russian mob wives when they were walking. They say he's not an eggplant, he's fucking retarded. It's been said several times throughout the series.

I believe this is what is called an 'abandoned punchline'. TV and Movies use this to set up a reaction to a joke, without having to tell a full joke. Not only does this allow them to cheat, but it typically gets the viewer more interested because they feel like they missed something and will pay more attention.

This is very similar to a MacGuffin, where there is a mysterious plot device that is never explained. (e.g. - The briefcase contents in Pulp Fiction)

In short, we aren't supposed to 'get it'.

Not sure if this is what they were thinking but -

They're in jail without cellphones, internet, etc - relatively enclosed from the outside world and extremely bored. A lot of common things occur or get passed along, such as a joke.

Jailhouse humor - especially during a flashback - could illustrate how simplistic things like a joke get passed on over the years with people coming and going from the inside of a jail.

Awesome show and I never heard the whole joke. I don't remember the punchline either
