Thanks Obama..

I'm sure someone will find reason to bitch and whine, but congress passed the Senate's bill and Obama will soon sign it. It will now be legal to unlock your cellphone and move to different carriers. The carriers wont be able to hold you hostage anymore.. Not that there is much competition anyway, but that's another issue.

suesheboy 07-26-2014 01:22 PM

Awesome. That was one of the dumbest laws ever.

AmeliaG 07-26-2014 01:28 PM

It became illegal again during the Obama administration and now it became legal again under the Obama administration. What hand did he have in this?

I would't normally object but ... I wish you didn't talk about politics like America is a monarchy, except when you want to justify bad things happening to the American people.

woj 07-26-2014 01:29 PM

is it bad or good news?

it will be easier to switch companies... but on the other hand the initial phone purchase will be more expensive...

Most people don't have any money, so if they want to sell any phone they better start dropping prices.

I think (this is experience in other countries) you could have the same prices as long as you sign the contract that you will stay with the carrier for 24 (or whatever is customary for said discount) months.

Yeah, funny how some obama fanboys think it is Obama who made it happen just because he signs the bill :1orglaugh

It's amazing that certain types of people can always find a reason to bitch and moan even about good news.. A sad sad life you must live.

This wont stop contract phones, it just means the carrier wont be able to hold your phone hostage by not unlocking it, after your contract has expired.

brassmonkey 07-26-2014 02:22 PM

i think obama just wanted to be on the books. he did nothing! not even clean up his home place. what a fucking joke!

I am moaning not about good news, not even about Obama. I am moaning about you praising Obama for this thing which may well be the thing that he did not even put much thought into :1orglaugh

Yep, that is standard procedure in EU if you want "cheap" phone (actually partial payment). Of course you can't get any phone like that (without paying extra), or at least in here you can't.

Well that's quite funny, because on the other hand, you guys seem to blame him for everything else, but when it comes to something good then nope.. he didn't do it.

This was kind of a experiment as I had a scientific theory and you have proven it right.

I knew that if I posted something good that everyone should be happy about and attached Obama's name to it, that you right wienies would come and moan.. :1orglaugh

if unlocking is legal, then there is no point in even locking the phone, so all phones sold for all practical purposes will be unlocked...

it's pretty clear that even if there is a contract, cell company will make more $$ with a locked phone, than an unlocked one... for example after contract expires, if phone is locked, then the customer is more likely to stay with that company... or customer is less likely to back out of the contract half way through, etc...

and so that means, that cell company would be willing to subsidize a locked phone more than an unlocked one...

and so unlocked phone = lower subsidy = higher price of the phone

There is no "you guys" as I do not blame Obama much at all (sometimes I just pop in similar threads to leave a comment, but just because I do not favor loser mentality promoting leftist parties. Not much of direct blame on Obama from me at all).

Makes sense. On the other hand lets assume that a person might save on charges for cell/internet service if he has ability to choose some other (cheaper) provider.
Maybe those savings would compensate higher initial price.
Just a thought :)

You can tender your phone and operator separately or order the phone from Somalia if you like (for real I would think more like China).

Or buy used one, or your friend's, wife's, etc. old one.

MaDalton 07-26-2014 03:20 PM

so the "less government, less regulation" folks want in this case more regulation to save 50 bucks? ;)

Rochard 07-26-2014 03:22 PM

The cell phones have gotten really sneaky. I noticed my phone just installed "sumsung billing" on it the other day...

that's the thing though, they have this ability now... if they have some tech know how, they could unlock it themselves... or they could go to one of the cell repair shops and get it unlocked for $10...

so now they will pay more for a phone and not really gain anything in the return...

Usually this kind of laws are aimed to help the majority of people. Is that unlocking even legal right now? Well, I don't got a cent in this shit, but just wondering.

How do you figure that it's the "less government, less regulation folks"?

I don't think any person of any sanity has ever called for NO regulation or NO govt.

But I do think our govt. is too big and does a LOT of over-regulation that needs to be fixed. Just because there are a ton of BAD laws, doesn't mean that there aren't some "good" laws that are needed and still to be passed (especially with technology advancing)

By the way...are you FOR bigger govt. and more regulations? Just curious.
I've often wondered why people would willingly want the govt. to run their lives even more than it already does.

How about a sensible approach? A govt. that actually works FOR the people. Cops that SERVE the public. Regulations that help to enrich society without overstepping and/or causing unnecessary hardship to people trying to make a living?

That's the way I believe it should be. :) Not anarchy. But a sensible govt. that is funded to do exactly what it's mandated to do...and not ONE more thing over that (like telling us what we can and can't see, think, read, write, etc.)

actually i was referring to 2 experts right here in this thread :winkwink:

but since you asked:

I am not unhappy how it is over here in CZ - and for a former eastern bloc country they are doing also economically ok.

taxes are reasonable, beer is good, women are.... nice :)

and besides that I tend to worry only about things that affect me directly - but i can say that nowhere else before i felt as free and safe as i do now.

You have never seen me blame Obama for anything in a thread.

You are obsessed with blame.

You can't discuss any issues because your final go-to is always that Republicans would be worse and everything is all their fault anyway. How does this blame mentality fix a single thing which is wrong?

I care about issues.

Blame and credit is best left for sports. Running a country is different from high school football.

Actually I pretty much just troll you guys because I see it as just the opposite.. I see you in these topics quite often bitching and moaning and nit picking everything that someone says whom is sticking up for what could be considered the left side of an argument, but you always ignore the total nonsense from those on the right.

You act as if you are somehow different and not constantly attacking one side while ignoring the other.. Let me introduce you to Mr. Kettle.

Show me one example of this.

I'm paying attention to issues. I am not attacking a "side" because, unlike you, I want to see problems solved for all Americans, not a particular team win.
