where to start with a new product concept?
 

Have an idea for aproduct.
have researched and it seems like its not been done.

I have no experience with product design or manufacturing.

Where would one start with this? Any good resources to learn the process?

First advice - if its going to be made in China eventually, don't speak with anyone connected to China. By the time you wake up in the morning, and have scratched your balls and had your coffee, they will have design and manufacturing in place, with labor for assembly on standby.

Second advice - there are plenty of talented unemployed people you can find on the job boards. Use LinkedIn to do some screening of who they know. Find the "right" people for each aspect of the project that lays ahead, and make them minority partners. You can have a good idea, but you need the right people to bring it to fruition.

The only way to proceed is to get a patent. Do that before you mention a word to anyone. If it's not patentable you won't have a chance.

There's too many unanswered questions to give you a realistic answer. Do you have funding? Is there a prototype? What is the commercial (military) application? Do you have a patent? All that stuff is pretty expensive and if you're not financially able to fund it, you'll need investors. Way too vague to give any real assistance.

In 2001, I developed a keyboard with a magnetic strip reader built into it, right of the keypad. When a customer made an online purchase, they swiped their card on their keyboard, it encrypted the data and sent it a long. I had the hardware and software built and ready to launch. I put 3D model displays, financial reports, production costs, and even broke down the marketing strategy to the demographic we were targeting. Then at the last minute, my "investor" is arrested for drug trafficking. Yeah, I was in Miami, forgive me to thinking an honest man had money in that city.

Moral of the story. I'm drunk. I'm pretty sure if I didn't smoke so much pot I would have gotten off my ass and found a new investor. But I didn't and now I'm posting advice on GFY. Some tips, if you get this far.

If you manufacture it in China, etc., there are huge and I mean HUGE differences in quality between factories and even employees. Good references and enough big batch of sample products eliminate most uncertainty, but you have to make sure that the tested factory does the manufacturing itself and doesn't delegate it to some sweat ass shop with total retards.

And whatever proprietary rights you get, you have to have those in China too (or in country X) or you can face the situation that the Chinese manufacturing company registers your product to itself in China. End result is that the Chinese company can stop your products leaving China, were those manufactured by anyone in there (some leverage for price negotiations). And they do register trademarks, patents, etc for clients products (to themselves).
