Blame the Brits, we had nothing to do with the word. I googled, there were different types of football in the 19th century when the rules of football were codified. The 'beautiful game' version, which ain't all that beautiful, became known as 'Association football' because the governing body was The Football Association, got abbreviated to Assoc football - then those effeminate English lads began calling it 'soccer'. The masculine lads continued to play rugby football, which is indeed a rough and manly game from which the greatest football of all, American gridiron football, evolved.

I agree it is football but teams should hire actors to perform a more convincing penalties. Some very rigged antics and nonsense decisions made this world cup.

Rugby is still known today as rugger.

Think there are some similar ones in cricket. It all comes from English public schools, where the toffs are educated.

Call it handegg or snaglefragle. Whatever the name is, it is still much more entertaining the Futbol. The fake fouls in Futbol make it almost unbearable to watch. Besides the fact that nothing happens in 90% of the game.

While we're being so pathetically literal we may as well rename Cricket to 'BATball'.

LOL, funny. you find two hours of TV where you get to see 1 hour forty five of adverts and talking heads entertaining ....

and lets face it, the few minutes they actually do play is as dull as dishwater. Handegg hasn't caught on in any other country because no one else is stupid enough to be taken in by a whole sport designed for advertising.

The word originated from heart of the very people that complain about people calling it soccer. The english football association came up with the term.

That's all I ever have to say to some 'bloke' hopped up on ales trying to start shit about someone calling their boring as shit sport soccer. Most of them have no clue about it or even how to retort. They either escalate it by trying to call you a liar or feel really stupid. Either way. Who gives a shit.

How does that play into the popularity of: flag football, peewee football, junior high football, high school football, and college football?

Such hostility on both sides of this argument. It's worse than a bunch of old high school sport relics whining about women's sports "destroying" their golden moment in life.
