What does "accidental killing" mean ?

"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is preparing to issue its first-ever take permit to allow for the accidental killing of golden eagles at a California wind facility"

dyna mo 06-27-2014 11:24 AM

fucking pg&e. if they weren't so chinzy and retrofitted their own power poles, they wouldn't need to make a deal like this.

They aren't going out and hunting Eagles, but instead they die by resting on power lines or getting caught up in windmills.

It's cruel because an eagle has more brains than a chicken.

one of the problems with wind farms is at high speeds, the birds apparently fly into them

however, they all seem to be painted a default white.. would be easy to simply colour them, or if it's a matter of 'ugliness', adding some of the several other forms of colour they'd be able to see that we can't

however.. probably cheaper just setting up this 'accidental killing' thing

kind of a weak argument there, people eat chickens, nobody is eating fuckin eagles..

although alligators aren't exactly killed for their meat either..

i wouldn't do it anyway.

mikesouth 06-27-2014 12:29 PM

Accidental means its unlikely people will make a special trip to hunt eagles, but if they see one while hunting something else, and have a permit, they can shoot it.

Also I think its worthwhile to note that they wouldn't be doing this if they didn't feel the population was in need of trimming in order to bring the local wildlife food chain into balance. Not having natural predators and being protected from humans can cause them to be a threat to other species if their population levels are not controlled.

Then you negate my comment with your following post. Did you read the article? Why do you think they did?

CDSmith 06-29-2014 01:19 AM

Hey hey, since these majestic birds are dropping like flies from spinning wind farm blades anyway, what are the chances one of you good kind citizens could scoop me up a fresh one off'n the ground and get it stuffed for wall mounting and ship it to me? I mean after all, no sense leaving them rotting on the ground, right?

I'm thinking one would look great at the lake place. :D
