The US patent office just ruled that the Washington Redskins name is derogatory to Native Americans and therefore voided their trademark!

That may mean a ton of sites using the logo and name for whatever else they want to sell.

The Vikings name is not derogatory toward nordics. The Redskins name is a derogotory name. Imagine a team trying to use the name "Blackskins" and then using a cartoon image of a Zulu warrior on their helmets. Or calling themselves "Brownskins" and putting a picture of a Mexican wearing a sombrero. Or calling themselves "Yellowskins" and then using a picture of a asian guy. Not too long ago it was in the news that the District of Columbia thought the name was offensive and wanted them to change it. They declined. Obviously this is a political attempt to force them to comply.

I've always been a 'cut off my nose' type of guy, but I think the Rhode Island Redskins has a nice ring to it. I'm sure there are several states that would love to have a local franchise and the tax revenue that comes along with it. Not that that would change anything, but if I were Snyder I would be wondering what kind of pressure they would apply next.

This is the second time it has happened. In 1999 it was cancelled and then in 2003 it was reinstated by a Judge on appeal.

They still have a common law TM for it - it just won't have federal protection of a famous mark. It really just means they would have a little more work to do in a legal sense to enforce it.

It doesn't mean they are forced to charge their name or even that they couldn't protect it.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. For the past dozen years or more they've been referred to by more and more people as the "DEADskins"

Their so-called 'offensive' trademark is morphing itself due to their shitty play. No need for gov't intervention at all. :D

The Philadelphia Eagles SB Nation site (Bleeding Green Nation) has a section devoted to Washington's team and calls it LOLskins.

We also refer to them as the Foreskins, but as was pointed out in the comments of BGN's article on this subject, the "Foreskins" name may be offensive to those who have been circumcised.

the process is.......interesting. I'm reading the dissenting opinion from one of the TM judges, as I understand it, the TM committee is tasked with evaluating this sort of thing with every TM application. The original approval process for the name in 1967 did do this and they approved it. The current TM court has received numerous complaints re: the name and reopened the evaluation. The important part is they are tasked with evaluating whether or not the term was derogatory in 1967- at the time of the original filing and after the original TM officials evaluated the name.

Unknown what it was before Columbus in the US, but last I heard estimates range from 2 - 7 million.

For example, making a commercial with a football team called "Pigskins" to sell you pork rinds
and dressing the team like the Redskins is not going to fly.
They wouldn't need a trademark on Pigskins to win a suit like that so why would they need a trademark on Redskins?
