This article is completely misleading.... Look at the chart from the article itself:

http://static3.businessinsider.com/i...07.09%20pm.png

The blue line represents "gun related incidents at schools". These seem to average, roughly, 20 a year, with a high of (say maybe) 38.

The red line represents victims. The low is 25 (1985?) while the high is 140 (2003?). The last "recent low" we had was 2005 with about 70 victims, whie we are currently running at over 120 victims. The's the third highest amount of victims since 1976.

The amount of incidents remains steady, but the amount of victims is clearly on the rise.

I would not say it's clearly on the rise...

It's funny the guy saying this is named Fox.

So this article is saying, "everything's ok. Our gun culture isn't going crazy, it's just liberal pussies crying about nothing."

MiamiBoyz 06-13-2014 02:17 PM

Let's be honest about it...the numbers are trivial and insignificant in this vastly over populated world.

If anything an increase would actually help to lower the carbon footprint which would be beneficial in the long run.

iSpyCams 06-13-2014 02:50 PM

In 1976 there were 219 million people in America. In 2014 there are over 319 million. That's a difference of at least 100 million people, over 30%.

So while that graph seems to show the rate of gun related incidents in schools being more or less stable over the last 38 years, it doesn't take into account the population growth.

So basically it seems you have less chance of being shot at school today than you did in 1976.

The stats don't count for inflation! That's an interesting observation.

I don't know how you can say that, if those were my sales figures with the blue line being sales tickets and the red line being a dollar amount I don't think I would feel like I was getting richer. If anything I would be worried about dwindling market share.

It's not misleading at all, as you restated the point of the article in your very last sentence. And as mentioned by pompousjohn, mass shootings are unbelievably down if you count inflation.

Probably even more so if you count the population of gun owners, which has been increasing exponentially since the White House started talking about "common sense".

So...we can assume you'd say the same thing if it was YOUR kid's brains decorating the school hallway?

Yes, you are correct. I would be sad but certainly understanding of the bigger picture.

This is part of my problem - I have a kid going to high school. This crap scares me.

However, a few years ago here my hometown we had a rash of teen suicides. (One couple was a friend of mine, they lost their son.) As a community we do a lot of suicide awareness , charity events, that kind of stuff, so I am hoping it has some kind of impact.
