WordPress Question

Hey WordPress People,

Is there a sequence of simple steps for migrating a fully functional WordPress site from a test directory on one server, to its permanent location on another box?

Thanks in advance!

Ask the host to do it. Should work.

and much faster than you can do it.

It's two different hosting companies.

The client wants me to recreate one of their existing sites as a "responsive" WordPress site - give them a test address for final approval - and them migrate the site to their box, replacing the site with the same domain name that is currently live.

If I were doing this in basic html I would have no problem, but as they want their site redone in WP this migration is new to me, and I'm not sure if there is an easy way to do it.

I suppose I can pay one of the two server companies for migration assistance, but I'd still like to know how to do it myself, should I need to test additional WP sites out again in the future.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

1. Download the DB via PHPMyAdmin or any WP backup plugin.
2. Download the entire install of WP
3. Move to new hosting
4. Open .sql file and do a find & replace for domain.com/test and replace with your domain.com
5. Import DB via PHPMyAdmin
6. Update wp-config to reflect new settings
7. GG.

edit: sometimes themes lose their settings in transfer. You might have to re-populate theme option panels.

There are a number of plugins you can use to create a back up. Then install the plugin and restore the backup.

It's not the most ideal, but it's idiot proof. I walked someone who pretty much only knows how to post to their Wordpress blog through this yesterday.

We used BackUpBuddy.

if you do what JD suggested but use this: https://www.interconnectit.com/wp-co...eplacedb21.zip to do the search and replace youll have a perfectly moved wordpress site, all settings will remain intact and you will only (maybe) have to just go into your permalinks section and hit update permalinks for your .htaccess to be updated

step by step instructions here: http://www.moeloubani.com/how-to-mov...-serverdomain/

Please make a full backup of all your files and sql database so you can restore it all. also, i normally deactivate any cache plugin working on the live site, to be 100% safe.
