Goodbye Camaro... hello Volt!
 

So, I really love Tesla's, but the price is out of range since we plan to buy a new house this summer, soooo... I am trading in my Camaro for a CHEVY VOLT, and I can't wait! I'll be taking delivery in about a week.

The Volt is a plug-in electric car. The range is about 75 Kilometers but the car has a gas-powered generator that takes over when battery power is depleted. Considering my average commute though, I will rarely if ever have to buy gas for it.

Please email all your republican friends and let them know that the keystone pipeline is no longer necessary. The world is slowly evolving and getting away from smelly, polluting, inefficient gasoline.

That is true in some locations, but not here. I live in Montreal, Canada. 100% of our electricity comes from renewable energy, Hydro Electric.


Not true. It takes 4 hours to fully charge a Chevy Volt. When I am home for the night all I have to do is plug it in, and its fully charged a good 4 hours before I wake up in the morning.


Not true. I live about 10 kilometres from downtown. I can drive there and back at least 3 times on a single charge. But since I can charge my car here at home and plug it in an an EV station (for free), its not a worry for me.

If I do run low on batter, the gas engine powers a GENERATOR, which in turn powers the electric motor.

I looked at the Leaf, but decided I liked the Volt better. A good second choice was the Ford Focus Electric but they are special order only and it takes about 5 months to get one. I didn't feel like waiting.

My cousin drives one of these. He refuses to park it in his garage now and it takes more than 4 hours to charge, even though that's the number they give.

My goal is to go off the grid completely... I went to a solar power seminar last weekend, so that will happen in the next year or so. After that I'm pretty confident it will be a Tesla.

4 hours is for a 240 volt connection. If you plug it into a regular socket it takes 15 hours. I don't know about you, but the only place I regularly see 240 volt connections is behind electric dryers. Of course you can always have one installed, but it's not like you can just grab any power source wherever you are and charge it quickly with a regular extension cord.

Also looks like you can't just use a regular 240 volt outlet, you have to buy one of their charging stations. Check out the price of these:

The Tesla is of course THE one.

But if you can't afford that at the moment and just really, really want an electric car...the Nissan Leaf appears to be far superior:

Not true. A Fully loaded Cruise in Canada is $30,375. A fully loaded Volt is $42,000. Quebec Pays $8000 tax credit to buy an EV, bringing the price down to $34,000, making the cost difference only $4000.

220/240 Volt connections are in every home here for washer / dryers. A charger is included with the Volt (and Tesla). An electrician can easily run the 240 lines to your garage.

There are currently Two hundred and Fifty 240 Volt charging stations in Quebec, and 10 of them within a few kilometres of me, and 2 of them within 4 blocks of me.


I really did consider the Leaf, but I didn't like the "fit". I'm 6'3" and found the car to be pretty snug, and also I'm not that crazy about the styling. Nice car for sure, but...

And yes, Tesla IS king... but if I have to choose between a Tesla and a house, I'll take a house...

According to the chevy website they only include the 110 volt charger. You have to pay for more for the 240 volt.

Are you even buying one or are you just trolling again? Seems like you should know this stuff if you are picking one up in a week.

Also when you are house shopping, make sure there's enough room left on the panel for you to add that 220 circuit, or it will get expensive.

It's pretty good, and I use it alot. It costs about $3.00 for the casual user but you can buy passes which save users money too.

Camaro's are assembled in Oshawa, Ontario. Both my camaros (2010, 2013) were built there. Each of my Firebirds ('87, 89, 91, 94, 99, 01) were built just north of Montreal, here in Canada. The Volt is the first non Canadian-built car I'll be buying. - it is built in Detroit, MI. You're welcome.

By the way Bottomtooth, even EV buyers want to add the 240 Volt charger, the price is only $490 USD or 521 CAD: http://www.pluginnow.com/content/gm-voltec. Installation here is $60 per hour and expected to take 2 hours only. Even the page you quoted says $490. The NISSAN charger is $2200, according to you. DERP!

I have a question for you. You are sounded by electrically powered stuff. Your computer, home stereo, TV's, lights, cellphone, toaster, stove, etc. Subways are electric. Maybe you even have an electric toothbrush.

That price is for the PART ONLY moron. If you want more than a 1 year warranty on it then you have to go through their recommended supplier for installation which is close to $1500 on top of that.

You might want to spring for the $1500 installation as well to get the better warranty, because lots of people have been having their chargers crap out at just over a year.

I'm not so sure about that.... There are federal and state programs that give you assistance, plus our county has a program called "mpower" that helps too. Factor in a tax write off and the fact that instead of paying $400 a month to the power company I would be paying $100 a month to own the system... Sounds like a deal to me.

I personally have no interest in an electric car as I figure a gas 4 cylinder is cheaper and good enough. Pay extra for electric and then when it does need work either expensive or impossible to fix yourself without melting the neighborhood. If I did consider one doubt I'd do a Volt.

It's not a hybrid. It's an "EV", or "Extended Range Vehicle". In an EV, the electric motor powers the wheels, and a gas motor turns a generator which powers the electric motor when the batteries die. All of the cars momentum comes from the electric motor.

A Hybrid car uses both motors to power the wheels, and has no generator. The cars momentum comes from both an electric and gas powered motor.

However, there are some plug-in hybrids that switch between both gas and electric.

Regardless, I think I understand your point. I would love to have a car like a Tesla that is pure electric. Having to carry around a gasoline engine (plus tank, oil, etc) is a waste and therefore less efficient, but oh well... in my opinion its a great first step.

The batteries drive the car at temperatures above 15F. Below 15F, the Gasoline part takes over.
