Small cracks that develop within the fiberglass bodies of modern cars and planes can quickly turn into irreversible damage, whichhaundermines their structural integrity.Unfortunately, the materials used to construct these vehicles, called fiber-reinforced composites, are challenging to repair using conventional methods.

A new system developed by researchers at thehaBeckman Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign embeds a 3D vascularized network within the composite, haakin to the way blood vessels embed tissue in the human body. This network enableshathese composites to repair themselves automatically when the material is damaged.

“When a fracture occurs, this ruptures the separate networks of healing agents, automatically releasing them into the crack plane — akin to a bleeding cut,” saidhaJason Patrick, a Ph.D. candidate in civil engineering and lead author on the paper.ha”As they come into contact with one another in situ, or within the material, they polymerize to essentially form a structural glue in the damage zone.”

After testing over multiple cycles, the researchers report that cracks healed successfully with nearly 100 percent efficiency.ha”The beauty of this self-healing approach is, we don’t have to probe the structure and say, this is where the damage occurred and then repair it ourselves,” said Patrick.

Nancy Sottos, materials science and engineering professor and co-corresponding author, added,ha”Creating the vasculature integrates seamlessly with typical manufacturing processes of polymer composites, making it a strong candidate for commercial use.”

Sorry about the strange "ha" stuff inserted in the text. Posting from my phone and something went funny on me.

So cool!

Yea read about that. Very awesome.

I think we're going to reach a point in the next few years where we can't keep pace with technology anymore.

Some of the things that have been developed atm are truly outstanding. A Chinese company announced a few weeks ago they've successfully printed a couple of houses with 3D printers and they hope to print a Skyscraper by the end of 2014!

It takes a fraction of the time and resources

I don't understand why our governments are becoming more and more authoritarian and stripping away civil liberties when there are all these incredible technologies being developed.

Electric cars, 3D printers, renewable energy the list goes on and on. Within in the next decade there shouldn't be a reason why we can't live sustainably, we finally have the technology.

If you've got an empty garage then you've got enough space to grow your own food supply using vertical farming and an aquaponics setup.

Dont see that happening any time soon.

Because the kind of people that gravitate to government are the kind of people that are motivated by power, and it is in the nature of government, and the people in it, to gather more and more power to themselves. Once they get it, they never let go of it..... until it gets to the point where people have finally had enough, and then it gets to an ugly "reset".

By the time people wake up there will be nothing left fighting for :upsidedow

It's coincided with the decline in living standards in the west, the whole thing just seems like a very clever bait and switch. The West declines, the East rises in prosperity and with it the type of governments that control their people.

Hasn't happened in China yet but it's only a matter of time before they'll have to relax their iron grip and become less authoritarian.

.:2 cents:

one hundred percent correct - power gathers power, wealth gathers wealth. All ownership societies - those that require payment from those they own to live, inevitably dehumanize their resources.
