just this morning I was thinking about the issues in the Ukraine, and then the though occurred to me it's about time for the President of the United States to weigh in... I figured since the Obama reaction to the crises in Syria was a speech about gay athletes in the Olympics we were due for another... and here it is

It is "Ukraine", not "the Ukraine".........

I would have thought Obama is capable of having opinions on 2 subjects at the same time - It might also seem a bit odd if he spent his entire day speaking about Ukraine...

Russian language rules do not apply to English language.

It was The Ukrainian SSR (Like The United Kingdom or The United states). And now it is just Ukraine.
"The Ukraine" even sounds strange, not sure how native English speaker would not have the feeling that something is wrong here.

In polish it's also just "Ukraina" with no "the" (or PL equivelent)

I've often seen Russians put "the" in front of English words where a native English speaker wouldn't.

Easier to get a hand in.

There is no "the" in Polish but there is in English.
