Anyone live or have lived in Florida?

Just curious how many people here live in Florida or have in the past and if so what part? Currently looking to relocate to FL but unsure about areas. Flying down all next week to look at houses in different areas including Boca Raton & Wellington but open to other areas as well.

candyflip 05-09-2014 05:21 AM

I lived in Orlando for a few years and would most definitely go back if I could convince my kids' mom to go as well.

JasonCollins 05-09-2014 05:32 AM

I live in Orland too. It was a cool city, beaches close by, theme parks, etc. There was always something to do. Nice weather most all year long.

Good luck with the relocation!

Jesse1984 05-09-2014 05:37 AM

Lived in Jacksonville for eighteen years and spent a lot of time in Tampa as well. If I never see Florida again, it'll be too soon.

It's too fucking hot, the people are too fucking stupid, and everything rusts.

But I do miss the storms and good barbecue and Ginnie Springs.

slapass 05-09-2014 05:43 AM

I have not spent any time in Orlando but other parts of the interior seem f ing horrible. West coast is so full of old people that it just gets under your skin. I lived in the Sarasota area for years and can't recommend it. Miami has always been a fun visit and is my first choice if I have to live in the US full time again.

sperbonzo 05-09-2014 06:06 AM

I live in North Miami and I have for 15 years. I live On the intercoastal waterway and I love it. For me it's all about the water. Beaches, boating, SCUBA diving, snorkeling, the islands close by, etc. Personally I would not live much North of Palm Beach, as it seems to basically become like a southern extension of Georgia, but that's just me. Call me or hit me up if you want to talk about it.

2MuchMark 05-09-2014 06:06 AM

I've never lived there but have spent a good amount of time there. Nice place, nice people, etc. Close to the big parks and lots of tourists as you might expect.

I don't know the bar scene much in Orlando. Pleasure Island was fun but closed years ago. Church Street Station was a good alternative. I'm sure there's others.

It is crazy hot and humid in the summer. The rest of the year is pretty nice.

Just don't get caught walking around in a neighbourhood wearing a hoodie and eating skittles, or else, you know... bang bang...

MediumPimpin 05-09-2014 06:14 AM

I have lived in both, right now I am in Boca.

Wellington is cheaper then Boca, more inland, more white trash, more rednecks. Boca is more upscale you can't really compare the two.

pornguy 05-09-2014 06:20 AM

Beach areas the best would be. Miami area North to Palm beach. Tampa/Clearwater as well.

Country area, Gainesville but Highspeed connection can be a pain.

JerseyPuma 05-09-2014 07:01 AM

i live near ft lauderdale. if youre younger and still looking for a bit of a party scene then thats a good bet. plus its between miami and west palm, so youre convenient to both.

you cant beat the weather in the winter, and youll get used to the stickiness. its nice to be able to swim in the ocean in january.

MediumPimpin 05-09-2014 07:06 AM

Another thing if you have kids and thinking of South Florida you need to live more inland, 15-20 miles from the beach, Parkland, West Boca, etc.

Unless you can afford a private school then go beach side.

The beach is for the younger kids crowd, inland more of a family lifestyle.

I lived in Orlando (Lake Buena Vista, actually, on International Drive near Sea World)

It's a nice area with lots to do (plus armadillos and alligators in the yard)

Offering much less to do, but being very nice islands, are Sanibel and Captiva

If I was to move back, however, it would be Key West, hands down...

Mark-G 05-09-2014 09:48 AM

Why Key West ? It's so far from everything ?

I like being far away from everything, and I'm an Island boy that spent 7 years in the Caribbean and enjoy my beach time. Key West is a nice compromise between tropical weather and waters, but with the safety and amenities of living in America -- and if you want to party, Duval Street is it... Lots of bars and great restaurants, too.

The Land-O-Lakes area north of Tampa has numerous nude resorts, if walking down the street nude with a drink/joint in your hand on the way to the pool interests you.

I find Tampa to have good bars and a great selection of live music. It's also where 50% of the show "Cops" is filmed. lol

What's with MaDalton hating on you?

That being asked? Don't come to this area. We don't want you. Like cheap beer? It's an acquired taste. :1orglaugh

MaDalton just likes giving me shit every now and then. I enjoy it.

Agree with you on Tampa, you either love it or hate it. I love it.

Have a house in Boca since 89.

Few towns other than Boca and Parkland are nice and safe enough with decent schools for me to ever consider.

Boca infrastructure, taxes, shopping and restaurants are excellent. Beaches less crowded, well maintained and beautiful.

Check crime statistics in other cities. You will move to Boca.

venus 05-09-2014 01:36 PM

I lived in wellington and west palm for 18 months, had to move back to Vegas...beaches suck, water is dirty

I lived on the beach in cocoa beach and I loved it...was working for NASA at KSC at the time.

for me it was all about the offshore fishing and diving...of course being single with a beach house had its benefits too....

the pros should be obvious mostly but nice to have no state income tax

the cons the heat (specially if yer inland), crazy ass thunderstorms with torrential rain are common. bugs dont die in the winter so they grow very large. people are insane (theres a reason that on fark.com fl is the only state with its own tag)

crockett 05-09-2014 03:04 PM

I lived all along the east coast of FL from Melbourne, Cocoa Beach to Daytona Beach. I lived there almost my entire life, but I'm kind of Florida'd out.

TidalWave 05-09-2014 03:38 PM

Wellington and Boca are both nice. I lived in Wellington for 7 years. Polo Country bitches.

RyuLion 05-09-2014 03:41 PM

I lived in Hollywood, FL beach for 5 years. It was heaven on earth..

money biz 05-09-2014 04:30 PM

Would never live in that fake facade.

mstyanda 05-09-2014 06:04 PM

I live in Florida. It is hot & humid and I can think of lots of places I would rather live.

bean-aid 05-09-2014 06:14 PM

Only retired people live in florida, half the year. During summer time nobody in florida, not a soul in site.

This about sums it up. At the time (2004 to 2010) I had a large studio in the ST Petersburg / Clearwater area and had to deal with lots of girls, their boyfriends, their baby daddies, their moms, their other boyfriend, and much more....

It was like living in the middle of the Jerry Springer show and we took to calling it "Springerville".

I have had photo studios for 28 years (Denver, Las Vegas and the Clearwater building). The only break-ins I ever had happened in Florida during those six+ years and it was about a dozen times. Each and every incident was related to a girl I shot... usually her boyfriend either demanding I give him the photos because I didn't get his permission or the boyfriend demanding that I pay her more because she is so much better than "blah, blah, blah"...

I wouldn't do it again in a business situation.... But, just living there and enjoying a simple life (without college age models to deal with) it wouldn't be bad. Beach bars, sail boats, rum.

How much was your rent in a place like this?

fitzmulti 05-09-2014 06:55 PM

I grew up in Miami Lakes.
Went to Hialeah-Miami Lakes Sr. High.

The Facebook page for my high school, has mysteriously been modified within the last 6 months to say my school is located in Havana, Cuba.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hiale...03115056395694
The end.

~~
P.S. I did not make that modification.
P.P.S. Yes, I know our mascot is the Trojans.

Polk County, a little south east of Orlando is the worst.

VikingMan 05-09-2014 10:10 PM

Florida is for vacation. I would never live there again. Biggest mistake of my life. Florida has many different types of people but the one thing they have in common is most of them are literately dumb as a box of rocks. Gator wrestling with rednecks was fun thought. And of course the South American girls I would meet in Miami were amazing.

QFT! If you even look at porn in this county, the holier than thou sheriff will tar and feather your ass after publicly hanging you.

There was a case years back about an iFriends performer... I want to say her name was Becca Lynn or something to that effect that was arrested and dragged through the mud for performing out of her own home. I'm not quite sure what happened with the case in the end. Let me see if I can dig something up on it.

EDIT: Here is a PDF from Lawrence Walterss, her attorney during the case. Interesting reading: http://www.adultindustryupdate.com/a...rosecution.pdf

I moved down to the Keys back in the late 90s. For the first six years I lived a couple of blocks from Duval Street in Key West. The first few years it was fun to be able to walk almost everywhere I wanted to go and just ride a bicycle to most other places.

Eventually though, I moved up the Keys a little, tried living on several other islands, and I'm now about 30 miles north/east of Key West on an island that's a National Wildlife Refuge so a lot of it is undeveloped. Key West is a short drive and Miami's about 100 miles away if I ever really need a big city for something.

The one thing I'd recommend is if you decide to consider living in the Keys, think about renting first instead of buying. Depending on your own situation there are different islands that may suit you better than others. Even with good advice, you won't really know which ones are for you until you've lived here awhile.

Whatever you decide, good luck with your move.

We do have kids so schools are a big deal. I am only 33 so I do not want to live in a retiree community. I have been to the Keys several times and while I enjoy vacationing there its just not the area for me. Hubby likes the Fort Lauderadale/ Sarasota area while I tend to prefer Boca/Wellington but we are now looking at other areas as well. I am only looking at A+ or private schools at the moment. Since we both work from home we don't have to worry about commutes so that helps. Being close to things like the airport, shopping, etc is a must. We want to be within 20 - 30 minutes from the water since he fishes and is on the boat quite a bit. Thanks everyone!

Sound like North Broward or South Pam Beach County is what you are looking for, three international airports within 45 min. Tons of private schools and really good public ones. More water ways then you can think of. As far as older people most have moved out to the west coast and further up north so that's not an issue.

I lived about 20 min from Sarasota and I hated it, very right wing, christian and old people, yuck!

One more thing about fishing if he likes to fish fresh water then Wellington is a better choice. Salt Water then Boca/Ft lauderdale is the place.
