Black Immigrants Earn More Than U.S. Blacks
Excuse me? How does this make sense at all?
************************** Black Immigrants Earn More Than U.S. Blacks Bridges - Ethnic Media Digest News Digest, Compiled and Edited by Pueng Vongs, New California Media, Mar 07, 2003 Black immigrants from Africa or the Caribbean fare better economically than their African American counterparts according to latest census figures in the San Francisco-based Sun Reporter. The typical black immigrant earned $7,000 a year more than the average African American in 2000, who made $33,500 ? the lowest of any U.S. ethnic group. Additionally, the unemployment rate was 5.1 percent for black immigrants compared with 10.2 percent for black Americans. This is compared with 3.9 percent unemployment for whites and 4.7 percent for Asians. Harvard sociologist Mary Waters said many employers favor immigrants because they assume blacks born in the United States will not work as hard. Other scholars say that immigrants come with more drive, desire and education. Immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean say they are used to working hard because there is no welfare or food stamps in their countries. ?The big joke in the black community is if you are Jamaican you must have three jobs,? said Joan Savory who moved from Kingston, Jamaica to Oakland. She said Jamaicans work hard because they have to send money home to their struggling families. http://news.pacificnews.org/news/vie...1 19bf29812d5 |
This one is easy!
1 works hard and the other hardly works.. |
I believe it. Its the same in canada. Obviously its not a univerasal thing amongst the entire population, but its pretty accurate

I'll bet this holds true for immigrants from many countries... Indians for example.

Interesting thread. There's a correlation between the distance an ethnic group travels to emigrate and their income level in the US. Due to travel expenses, this selects for middle class professionals. Of course, refugees don't fit this correlation.
Another trend mentioned by Thomas Sowell in Ethnic America is that even within most ethnic groups, later arrivals tend to make more money than 2nd or 3rd generation members of their ethnic group. |
