Was there not hype a few weeks ago about never needing to update Wordpress again? And that all future updates would be installed automatically?

Why then have I needed to update wordpress to 3.9?

Did your blogs autoupdate at least once? If yes, maybe autoupdates are only for minor updates (example from 3.8.2 to 3.83). If not, maybe you do not have set up auto update thing.
