Rackshack - some servers down?

It appears that one of my servers and the main rackshack.net server is down. But 4 other servers I have at rackshack are not effected. Anyone else having problems?

And, before the "you get what you pay for" posts start...I was going on a minimum of 5 months up with no interruptions

Mikeee 03-07-2003 10:41 AM

Yeah, the whole network is down I think

49thParallel 03-07-2003 10:42 AM

I guess I got lucky with my other rackshack servers..at this point they are running as usual. Must just be certain subnets that are down.

Opps..correction...I just logged into SSH on a couple of my servers...they are still up for me...but from the numbr of httpd requests coming in, I would say it's not up for many others. Doh...

Triple 6 03-07-2003 10:43 AM

back up - for me at least.

Groove 03-07-2003 10:45 AM

http://www.rackshack.net/ is down.

However my two servers seem fine.

Touch wood! :)

dchottie 03-07-2003 10:54 AM

All of mine with rackshack are down . . .

Bigwebmaster 03-07-2003 11:27 AM

Half my racks are down :(

picindex 03-07-2003 11:27 AM

Bigwebmaster 03-07-2003 11:29 AM

Yup I know, I have never really cared for them... only stay with them for the price. As far as quality, um :throwup

The rumors says DOS attacks.

xdcdave 03-07-2003 12:59 PM

RS was doing good for a while there too

dchottie 03-07-2003 01:00 PM

man i'm fucking tired of hackers. All the friggin dos attacks lately and now someone has liberated one of my emails to send out their fucking spam. I'm tired of having to clean up after these fuckers. Not to mention the moola they're costing me.

Just a question.

Did any of you rackshack users upgrade your sendmail ? Those of you who did are probably still up while those of you who didn't will probably see new websites and files on your systems.

:2 cents:

All my rackshack servers are working perfectly as always. I get 10 or 15 minutes downtime a month, usually when they upgrade a router or something.

And yes, I upgraded the Ensim patches with new sendmail yesterday.:thumbsup

dchottie 03-07-2003 01:16 PM

man i'm going to kill my hosting provider if he didn't install those updates. Looks like i'm going to have to go into his server and update them myself

49thParallel 03-07-2003 01:16 PM

Not sure if the sendmail issue has anything to do with it. 1 of my servers is down. 4 are still up. None of them have the newest sendmail installed. Just lucky, perhaps, or maybe it's something else.

JFP dude, can you ICQ me? Need to talk to you, havent talked in 6 months bro...

By the way the sendmail expolit is supposedly not in the wild yet. No excuse for not updating, but you probably have a few days.

I have a couple of servers at rackshack for doing TGP & MGP galleries -- 2 of them are down, 1 is intermittant and 1 is just fine. The only ports open on these are 22 and 80 (ssh and web) - not even FTP - so this is probably NOT related to the sendmail exploit (sendmail isn't even installed on any of the servers).

I just got off the phone with one of the rackshack support people and they can't give any ETA yet as to when stuff will be up, however the guy I spoke with was called into work a few hours early because they are now swamped lol. They also stated it was a network related issue wouldn't comment one way or the other if it was a denial of service attack.

Needless to say, 4 servers with round robin DNS and the ability to add and remove servers from the mix in under 90 seconds really helps :winkwink:

Anyway, just thought I'd share what I know about it...

From irc.ev1.net #rackshack

<RS-Greg> ATTENTION: All segments are now back online. Please respond if
+anyone cannot currently reach their server and msg me an ip address.

Isn't that called "load balancing?"

Round-robin is the process of handing out a subsequent IP address to each person requesting your page. If the IP the DNS hands out doesn't work, the user still gets 404'd.

Load balancing redirects traffic to available servers with the least congestion.

CGI 03-07-2003 03:08 PM

It is, however if you set the DNS TTL to only 90 seconds and use a script to check the servers, automatically removing unreachable servers from the DNS and inserting them back in as needed - it's a very basic high availability system.

But yes, the main reason I do it is for load balancing -- you're exactly right :)

MonkeyMan 03-07-2003 03:09 PM

Arent there places out there who give out free name servers? I pay zoneedit becasue I like having a nameserver on each side of the country.

CGI 03-07-2003 03:14 PM

granitecanyon.com
xname.org

Those are 2 I know of.. sure there are more though, I just haven't had the need to really look for any....

Anyone else want to add to this list? Could be handy for a lot of people who have slow ISPs or want off-network DNS servers for backup.
