They do have a certain amount 'editorial' control over what ends up on Google Play Store - People take it for granted that Google have thoroughly vetted the apps - I know I am guilty of that myself...

You've missed the thread idea entirely.

Idea is that you should not give that many permissions to any apps.
If you are saying that google play should not allow apps like that to be listed - that would be good idea as well.

Imagine the data these apps harvest. This is why they can sell companies who don't make money for millions, and in some cases billions, of dollars. It's all about the data.

Okay, Sid. I spent a little bit of time over the last couple of days writing an app JUST FOR YOU! Look for dVasive by LFCubed on the google play store. It will alert you when your camera or microphone are in use. ;)
