*SPOILER WARNING* Who poisoned Joeffrey?
Littlefinger admitted planning it to Sansa, implying that it was Olenna Redwyne (Margaery's grandmother) who poisoned Joffrey and the only possible witness, Ser Dontos, was killed by Littlefinger after delivering Sansa to him.
The Olenna Redwyne thing isn't outright said but it's the conclusion Sansa reaches and Littlefinger never denies it. This IS the master of manipulation we're talking about here, though, so anything is possible.
Varys, I'm not so sure even knows what's good for the realm. Would Kevan have been so bad? Or Tommen? Tommen might not have been the prototypical strong king but he was surely a better choice than his brother, he was still very young, so who knows what kind of man he may have turned into. I don't understand how he thinks the realm is in peril from anything other than the war Varys himself is orchestrating by helping the Pentoshi (forget his name) bring a Targaryen army back to Westeros. Hell, the realm wasn't even that bad under Robert, so why bother murdering Jon Arryn? Varys was even plotting to kill Ned Stark ("if one hand can die, why not another" paraphrasing, here) with the Pentoshi. Two assassinations that would surely throw the realm into turmoil. I'm not so sure that Varys is at all concerned about the well being of the nation.
