Disturbing Global Warming news: Cateret Atoll to be under water by 2015
From http://www.global-greenhouse-warming...ret-Atoll.html

Quote:

Carteret Atoll, also known as The Carteret Islands are part of Papua New Guinea located 86 kilometres northeast of Bougainville in the South Pacific at 4°45′S, 155°24′E. Carteret Atoll incorporates a scattering of low lying islands in a horseshoe shape stretching around 30 kilometers in north-south direction, with a total land area of 0.6 square kilometers and a maximum elevation of 1.5 meters above sea level.

http://www.global-greenhouse-warming...Map.jpg?aba085

The islands were named after the British navigator Philip Carteret who discovered them in the sloop Swallow in 1767. In 1896 a Samoan-American woman, known locally as ‘Queen’ Emma Coe, bought the island for four axes and 4.5 kg of tobacco. Under Imperial German protection, she had all the trees chopped down and replaced with coconuts, and she imported Papua New Guineans from New Ireland to work the plantations.

As of 2005 about one thousand people live on the islands. Han is the most significant island with partial (but rapidly dying due to saltwater introgression) tree cover, the others being small islets in the lagoon.

I'm so tired of all of this "chicken little" alarmist bullshit.

Go look up the "Holocene highstand".

Research indicates that sea levels were up to 3m above mean sea level as measured today.

One research example:

Quote:

A review of the literature provides 92 estimates of the middle to late Holocene sea-level highstand on Pacific Islands. These data generally support geophysical model calculations that predict a +1 to 3 m relative sea-level highstand on oceanic islands due to the Earth?s rheological response to the melting of the last continental ice sheets and subsequent redistribution of meltwater.

You mean to say "back under water".

It is completely alarmist when in reality, and in the grand scheme of things, it means absolutely nothing. None of this is unprecedented.

There is climate change and the islands are headed under water - The debate is 'what is causing it, is it us?' - That gets lost sometimes...

My POV is that we have not helped:2 cents:.....

It's pretty alarming for the people on the islands...

Sure, I suppose the result might be alarming to them. But there is no guarantee that every bit of inhabited land will remain inhabitable forever. The reverse is also true. Millions of people live on land now that was uninhabitable in the not too distant past. Myself and those islanders included.

In terms of geological processes I would think that the prospect of a major catastrophic earthquake under downtown LA is far more alarming than the slow subsidence of some tiny islands.

I believe that there is and will always be climate change, do we add to it, sure we do, but I also think that to change that, world order would have to take effect. I was just in China, in Shanghai, they banned motorized scooters in exchange for batter powered. While that helps, a lesser carbon footprint can be obtained with hydrogen fuel cell tech.....

By the time we got to Beijing, the haze was getting worse, but still ok

Just as the Hawaiian islands are rising out of the water at one end and sinking at the other.... Plate tectonics is not "global warming".

So pacific islands are disappearing in the next two years due to rising sea levels, but Venice (at sea level) isn't ?

I'm no geologist, but that seems odd.

Venice has been all over the news here because it is sinking under the waves - They are building a multi billion dollar protection system to try and save it...

An overwhelming majority of climate scientists agree that climate change is happening and that the sea levels will rise. I'd check out the first episode of the second season of Vice TV if you want a really good visual representation of what's happening. Its not a matter of if at this point, but a matter of when. Maldives is under water, and so is Venice. I guess the majority won't catch on though until it happens to NYC.

Yes, take ONE little piece of info to make your stance.

Never-mind the fact that ice sheets cycle with shrinkage and expansion. They shrink and expand. Its natural, but the rate of shrinkage is faster than the rate of growth now.

Global warming is real. Yes, some of it is natural but the damage done in just the past 40 years is something that would normally take 100's of years (if it was all natural).

I see it myself in my own community. I never seen the types of heat and extreme precipitation as a kid that I see now. For climate change to be this noticeable at my middle-age, it's quite drastic.

Those who deny it being a fact are cowards to what is coming. This planet is about to go through major man-caused changes and you will all need to stop living so wastefully if generations after us are to have anything left.

The earth will only get so hot and the atmosphere only so dense in vapor before it all comes back to us. Major snowfalls, major rainstorms. etc. Eventually it will balance out but with the use of fuels and removing more and more of the forestation.. it will take 100's of years to recover..

Where did you find river access... Every lake I've visited you had to pay a fee to enter a park before you could get any water access. I just left Caynon Lake area three days ago and every boat ramp was closed and all the Army Core of engineers parks charged entry fees and even their boat ramps were closed due to the low water.

I stayed in San Marcos two days ago but didn't find any river access so I came up to Austin yesterday and I'm at Lake Travis, but you have to pay $10 for the joy of going to a boat ramp that is dried up.

I have a Folbot, folding kayak and I haven't used it since I left New Orleans. I understand the low water is out of their control, but I've never visited a state that had so little public water access that someone didn't have their hand out wanting money for you to use. I don't mind paying here and there for a nice park, but fuck even lakes with no staff and litter all over the place they expected you to buy a $5 per peron permit to access the lake.

Man is definitely "not helping". We pollute like crazy and we're adding CO2 warming the planet, but reduction in farmland and deforestation is causing less CO2 to be removed from the atmosphere.

But regardless, we should at least be responsible for helping the planet. This is fact something that you would think that everyone, even Vendilla, should agree on, but nope.

Heh, yea I went to hippie hollow once in a boat when I was like 15. The people we were visiting had a boat, so the dad took me and his son out on it but didn't mention anything about a nude beach.. We were just trolling along and titties!

On side note, after driving around a bit today and exploring, I found a few access points on the river that I can get my kayak in, so maybe the next few days I can have some fun.

In my own community, it was both much colder AND much hotter 40 years ago. There is NO evidence of any sort of warming, that's why the people manipulating your small brain are now calling it climate change.

Of course I am not qualified to say for a fact that Global Warming is real. I'm not a scientist. However, scientists, Climatologists, Nasa, NOAA, all say Global warming is a fact, since I know for a fact they are all much smarter than me, I am inclined to take their word for it.

Your "own community" is "weather". "Weather" is local, while "Climate" is global. Or put another way, the "mean temperature" or "average". What you, I and everyone else sees with our own eyes and weather forecasts are local, small pieces. The average temperature, the mean temperature of the entire earth, is rising.
