Idea: How to make users turn off ad-block

Hey everyone,

I was recently reading about ad-block. I have seen lots of videos on it lately (Mostly on mainstream sites) but I imagine it applies to adult websites as well.

Just out of curiosity I was looking into ways to get around ad-block. It seems like most methods would be ok, but then I got this other idea.

What if a website makes its interface menu or buttons, whatever, content even, load in the same way that an ad-would and trick ad-block into blocking parts of the website, making it so the user can't even use the website at all unless they disable ad-block.

What do you guys think? Would this idea work?

Your idea is interesting, though I'm not sure it's technically feasible. But I do know that it would make me instantly close the browser and move on--I'm not inclined to let a website blackmail me into removing a protective feature from my browser.

Yeah it is a bit different. I would have no idea how to do it, and wouldn't do it myself, but for websites that have a lot of traffic from adblock users, it might be an idea.

Especially if your only revenue from your website is from ads, then this would be a way to either get the user to turn it off or leave, one way saves bandwidth the other allows for site to generate ad revenue.

It's a good idea actually but sites are already doing that. It turns into a cat and mouse game as the real content gets whitelisted by the ad block maintainers.

Chances are you'd piss off the surfer if he can't nav the site without turning off adblock.

And poof...he's gone fappin' to your competition.

For the life of me, I just do not understand why there is such a cat and mouse game when it comes to AdBlock. If people don't want to see banners, so be it.

A much better approach, in my opinion, is to proactively engage them in other ways. For example, have a simple script that detects adblock. If detected, replace the banner creative with a simple text advertisement that is included, not run through a script.

eg: (basic code for illustration purposes, NOT actual working code):

If adblock == 'YES', include /path/to/text/ad.txt
Else include /path/to/openx/adzone.txt

The first one will load a simple text file that can be styled via css. The second could contain your ad software's javascript for that zone.

The absolute dumbest thing I have seen people to do yet was redirect adblock users to a page to "educate" them, or worse, redirect them to some page off your site.

If people don't want adblock users on their sites, feel free to send them this way.

It would be very easy for you to get content on your site blocked. Just put your content in a path with a blocked url string from https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/easylist.txt

You could also popup a warning to let people know that your site is not viewable if adblocker is turned on.

I would love to educate them and send them to pop up hell - In the end though these are people that have not seen all the great offers - Use text to tell them why they want it and use whitelabels for links...

If one gets blacklisted then what the hell - Use another one - NameCheap are doing .info and .us domains for 98 cents this week.....

I'll never stop using adblock, and no matter what work arounds you come up with, the internet will stay one step ahead.

Congrats...

Ad block is a must unless you like malware and excessive advertising. People wouldn't be as inclined to use ad blockers if they weren't bombarded with a bunch of BS all the time.
