and no i dont have any vested interest in sharper image |
You can get them for dirt cheap off Ebay directly from Sharper Image. They're refurbs but half the price of the new ones. The little wall units are selling for $20 bucks each, and they retail for $69 or something in the stores...

How many square feet do they cover? I bought a hepa filter and it didnt do shit. I am in a loft that is basically a box, its 1200sq ft with 14 ft ceilings.

How much do they cost?

They do a good job of picking up big stuff, and making the air smell better. But they do not, and cannot, remove most of the small stuff that people are allergic too (mold spores, pollen, etc.). Only a true .02 hepa filter can do that. |
Had one, threw it away, absolutely hated the shitloads of ozone it puts out. Coming into a room after it's been running for a while made me physically ill from the small. That shit CAN'T be healthy.

NASA did research on cleaning air indoors for space travel, etc... They have a list of about 10 indoor plants you can buy to dramatically improve your air quality...

There are currently 250 IONIC BREEZE units on eBay - virtually all of them from Sharper Image.

Lots of companies will dump their returns this way because it beats the 5 or 10 cents on the dollar they'd get for it from a salvage place. Good point though. |
THe Ionic Breeze is a joke.
Consumer reoprts rated this and 15 other air cleaners in feb of 2002. They were the only not certified by AHAM (an independant org that measures the amount of pollen, dust and tobacco) taken out of the room - and the reason is obvious - it doesn't work worth crap. You might as well put tape out to filter the air. If you go to the sharper image store and check it out - you will see there is no way the amount of "breeze" that is blowing could possible clean anything more than a small closet. Consumer reports gave it 1 out of 100 - the second worst model was a 28 out of 100. Here is what they said: "The other electronic-precipitator model, the Sharper Image SI637 Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifier, proved unimpressive in our tests. Ads for this unit tout its silence and miserly power consumption. Both are attributable to its lack of a fan. But so is its disappointing performance; we found almost no measurable reduction in airborne particles. " |
anyone else for or against these?
