I think what they are saying is, since it's been 9 hours since they've made contact, they would have run out of fuel by now. Not that they ran out on the way to Beijing.

I think you are right on the "broke apart". If it blew up, there wouldn't be 2 long, separate oil slicks. Media is saying the oil slicks are "consistent with a crash at sea."

Consider that the 777 has a flawless record aside from the San Fransisco crash that was pilot error. Now one has apparently exploded to smithereens the same week Russia gets China's blessing on Ukraine (which they needed because China is heavily invested in Ukraine).
