Affiliate tracking, how?

Hi

Can someone please explain how the cookies are deployed and read?

1. Potential buyer clicks on affiliate link, at this point how does the cookie get deployed onto the buyers computer?

2. Then when potential buyer is on merchant site, how does the affiliate program script get the cookie data from the buyers computer?

Thanks

B

it all starts with the unique tracking URL that the advertiser/Network provides for the affiliate. After the user completes the action required a conversion pixel fires. I've trained affiliate managers and clients to understand this. If you need any help here... I've added you to ICQ. I'd be happy to explain so you can understand.

Good luck,
Chase

This is most likely another Chris Butler fake nick. Be careful what you share with him. :2 cents:

Really depends on the tracking setup. Some work via the site in question passing the affiliate tracking to the join form and then getting it back on successful signup. Others work via the processing company reading the cookie (such as CCBill) since they set the cookie in the first place.

By what method does the affiliate platform request the the cookie gets read when then buy visits the merchant site?

Thanks

Cookies are set and fetched by the URL location's server according to the web browser's user set configuration.

All cookies from, and for, that .domain -- are the only cookies accessible, or able to be set or updated, by that .domain.

Google-Analytics tracking cookies for example are set by a JavaScript placed on that domain -- but the cookie's domain is .google.com.

.domain 's server cannot access a cookie set by Google-Analytics tracking and that is why you need to visit Google Webmaster Tools to view the stats created from your site's visitors by the Google-Analytics tracking cookies.
