Follow their application instructions to the letter.

Expect them to take several months to review your application.

I would give you a link, but I can't seem to access their site right now... but it's right on the first page. It tells you exactly what you have to do to become an editor. Basically, find a category you know a lot about (deep deep category, not one that's too general)... then click the link at the top of that category "Become an Editor"... fill out the questionnaire, prove that you know what you are talking about, and you're in. Pretty simple actually... and it's fun too! WWWEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

i keep applying for BBW categories. I might not know many things but the BBW niche I do know very well both as a webmaster and in real life. I keep getting turned down. So, don't know what they are looking for. Oh, well.

Part of what it says in the application is to show examples of the category you are applying for with sites of your own that are approved. If you don't have BBW sites approved in the category you are applying for, you will probably be denied.

I can get you into some small adult cat for $2500
you can work from there and eventually get editing privileges in some worth category.

okay...how they decide if you are planning on using it for comercial gain? That is on their list of reasons for denying for. I would of course continue doing my own BBW sites so how do they factor in that if you know the niche and have some sites listed then of course you are a professional looking to make money from your niche. That doesn't mean I am going to abuse the position.

jollyperv 03-06-2003 10:04 AM

It only took them 20 minutes to deny me....fuckers.

It took them about 3 months before they approved me.

~shrug~

Maybe they've speeded it up since then.

I have noticed that once you are an editor and you apply for further priveledges, they process those applications quickly, within a week or so from what I've seen.

Too much info dude(ette?)- there are only so many personals cats.

I'm a dmoz editor. Be prepared to show evidence that you're an expert (you have extensive esoteric knowledge) and that you're thorough (show tangible evidence of this). 99% of people in these parts would miss on one or the other. if you're for real you should do fine. dmoz has a strong librarian mindset, and that pervades all categories. many category applications want all of the power but none of the responsibility, and they reveal that immediately. it's hard to find solid volunteers to handle certain categories.

recently i applied for a new mainstream category and was told i needed to scrub one of my own before the meta editor would even process the application. that category is one of the cleanest in adult.

people who apply and don't hear back for 3 months... reread the above. think about how you approach other large organizations when a request seems to fall through the cracks, and keep in mind that this one is a volunteer effort.

It's hard as hell to break into the "adult" faction of DMOZ editors. I'm an editor but my category is mainstream.

MandyD 03-07-2003 02:02 AM

Ok guys, I'll let you in on a few secrets on getting into Dmoz the first time :)

First, find a category with NO editor.
This category must have less than 50 sites listed.
You can apply for an alphabar of a category if you are looking for a specific area to keep the listing number down.
Supply information on 3 sites which should be listed in that category. (make sure they aren't already listed, they are not over powered by advertising materials etc..)
Give the sites that you submit a small description of what's inside the site excluding any hype!
Do not repeat the category name in the descriptions.
Be honest with your application!
Trust me, if you BS you way through it, you won't last long.

If anybody wants further help on this, feel free to shoot me an email and I'll see what I can do to help. I've been an editor for a couple of years now and I have experience training new editors so if you need a hand, shoot me an email .here

Good Luck!

Don't start out in Adult.

It's not the easiest place to get into due to all the spammers who want to get in there. ;)

Pick some category you know lots about and do good editing for a month or so. Until you have say 2-300 edits. Then apply to Adult.
