BigFrog 03-06-2003 06:15 AM

If you are an American citizen you don't. Just bring your liscence. A copy of your birth certificate would be a bonus, but not absolutely necessary.

Don't complicate it at the border with any talk of business, just say you're going on vacation.

Lived for 5 years in Montreal as an American, crossed the border 100 times.

Have fun, beautiful place, great beer.

You need proof of citizenship. Which means a birth certificate or passport. The are a bit more strict in airports than they are driving accross the border.

McAttack 03-06-2003 08:21 AM

Screw that! You need a passport and a signed document that you're not trying to invade Canada! :winkwink:

But seriously, if you CAN get a passport, it's obviously the safest, but 95% of the time, the birth certificate/license combo will work.

your real problem is trying to come back to states,,

they might not want you to comeback,, so bring some extra clothes just incase

I know of a guy who couldn't get back into the U.S. You don't need a passport (though it's a plus), but you DO definitely at LEAST need a birth certificate.

While I was living inthe US my photographer woudl frequently come to montreal to shoot
when going abck to the Us on one trip all he had was his licence, the INS dude asked him how did he know he was really an american since a DL proves nothing, he said his ture southern fourm, well I was educated in the US and went to college in the US and am still ignorant :)

Sorry not bash you guys to the south this is a true story :)

Tom passport always best, hell I use mine as ID when I travel in canada even, but a bitch cert and a photoID like a DL will be enough

They are right , a government issued photo Id usually does the trick, as well as a birth certificate! And yes do not mention Business.......holiday is best. are you coming up for the web master summit??

Tom if you find that you can't get a passport in time (there are rush services you can put on them for an extra fee and you can get passport photos made at most Walgreens), don't sweat it. Just go ahead and have it made for next time, and in the meanwhile take a driver's license (or state ID) AND birth certificate.
I went up to Montreal for CybernetExpo last March (just 6 months after 9/11) and all was smooth sailing with just my license - but I had my birth certificate just in case. The biggest problem I had was trying to figure out at which kiosk they were dumping our flight's luggage. :glugglug

Just wear a turban and speak with a broken Arab accent and just say, "two weeks" to all questions. :thumbsup

What? Maybe it was one of the acceptable forms of ID, but you don't NEED a passport to enter Canada if you are a US citizen.

angeleyes 03-06-2003 10:32 AM

Make sure the birth certificate has a raised seal on it or that is a certified copy. You might run into a jerk in the airport though that will give you a hard time about not having a passport. When I returned from Jamaica (which legally you do not need a passport for--I got read the riot act going back through customs).

Have a safe trip.
