Word: 'Queer' offensive to gay community?
 

JW about some opinions if 'Queer' is accepted or it is offensive in the gay community as far as porn goes.

Reason I ask, I acquired a domain name that has this word in it, as I don't know anything about the niche. I'd like to pass it on to someone who could use it but didn't know if they'd take offense and say GFY.

Kind of like some women address themselves as a sexy bitch, others would backhand you for it.

As someone who deals with language a lot, you should only treat words as being offensive if they're used offensively.

You can say offensive things without using 'offensive' language:

I think individuals that are considered African American should be treated unequally when it comes to public services.

You can also say non-offensive things using 'offensive' language:

Damn nigga, that's one fine piece of ass!

Language should be treated as an entity that we use to convey ideas and concepts. If the ideas and concepts in one's head are not offensive, using so-called 'offensive' language does not suddenly make it offensive.

So no, the word 'queer' is not inherently offensive. The context that it's used in should decide if the usage of it is, though.

Queer is now a term used to relate to a whole genre of sexual lifestyles I believe, not just teh gays.

Queers vs. THE Queers can have 2 separate meanings, I think too, kinda like Jews or The Jews, or Those blacks.

I think words like Homo and Fag are fine to use in an offensive but funny way.

I remember using the word homo in front of my mother one time. She really took an exception to it, calling it "antiquated" and "offensive". :1orglaugh

This - it's a term for those with fluid sex, gender and sexuality (those that fall outside the 'traditional' lines of gay & straight, male & female, etc).

There was also a reality TV show called Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

"Take me to the nearest bar, cabbie, but not a queer bar" --- nothing wrong with that, even if the cabbie is queer. I mean gay.


But after you spit chewin' tabacky through the toothless gap in your sneered up redneck mouth you say "Fuckin' queer" while looking a guy up and down with over-emphasised disgust --- I'd say some people might take exception.

correct. Though queer is also used as a catchall term that includes gay men and women, trans etc. as well.

Personally, as a gay man I dislike being referred to as queer or lgbt.

But I think you're okay using it for a gay site, just depends on the domain

Everyone should speak of their own sexuality within their own frames of reference. Those who set out to shape the language, shouldn't get to dictate the language.
